Welles was only 23 years old when his Mercury Theater company decided to update H.G. Wells’s science fiction novel ‘The War of the Worlds’ for national radio. An announcer broke in to report that “Professor Farrell of the Mount Jenning Observatory” had detected explosions on the planet Mars! The radio listeners were informed that a large meteor had crashed into a farmer’s field in Grovers Mills, New Jersey. He had little idea of how legendary it would eventually become.

An announcer reported that widespread panic had broken out in the vicinity of the landing sites, with thousands desperately trying to flee. At the end of the hour the director wrapped up the radio drama by telling his audience… “This is Orson Welles, ladies and gentlemen, out of character to assure you that ‘The War of the Worlds’ has no further significance than as the holiday offering it was intended to be. The Mercury Theatre’s own radio version of dressing up in a sheet and jumping out of a bush and saying ‘boo!’”

FIRST VIRAL ‘FAKE NEWS’ | MEDIA Using fake news bulletins and other highly dramatized devices, Welles’ show fooled listeners into believing an alien army was destroying New York and spreading out across America. Panic ensued — even though announcements were made during Welles’ program that it was just a drama.. one should never underestimate the dumbness of the public. “The shame invasion also demonstrates the lack of perception in the public mind, and its willingness to believe anything it hears.”

Majestic Radio #800 a floor-standing console made in Chicago in 1937, which featured a gorgeous walnut veneer sold for $140 in 1937 during the Great Depression. Early radio models had ornate woodwork and looked like furniture. They were also physically big, an imposing presence that mirrored their stature as the center of life in many American households. Bigger was better. How much would it cost in today's dollars?

Sunday Swing: Swing… The name came from the emphasis on the off–beat, or weaker pulse. Swing bands usually featured soloists who would improvise on the melody over the arrangement. The verb "to swing" is also used as a term of praise for playing that has a strong groove or drive. Enjoy the Vintage Sound of 1930s & 1940s Big Band Swing!

SATURDAY NIGHT SWING...Benjamin David Goodman (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American jazz clarinetist and bandleader known as the "King of Swing". In the mid-1930s, Goodman led one of the most popular musical groups in the United States. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938, is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music."

SATURDAY NIGHT SWING | “Take the ‘A’ Train” is a Billy Strayhorn composition from 1939. It quickly became a signature tune of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and is, to this day, one of the most famous compositions of the swing era. Its origins can be traced back to the beginning of the Ellington/Strayhorn collaboration. The bandleader offered Strayhorn work in his organization in 1939 and sent him money to make the trip to New York City from Pittsburgh. Ellington also instructed Strayhorn to take the ‘A’ train upon arriving to New York City – the ‘A’ train refers to the then new A subway service line running through New York City, going at that time from Eastern Brooklyn into Harlem and Manhattan.

SATURDAY NIGHT SWING | "Jumpin' Jive" (also known as "(Hep-Hep!) The Jumpin' Jive") is a famous jazz/swing composition, written by Cab Calloway, Frank Froeba and Jack Palmer. Originally recorded on July 17, 1939, on Vocalion Records, it sold over a million copies and reached #2 on the Pop chart. This clip from the movie Stormy Weather (1943) — featuring Cab Calloway and his orchestra performing Jumpin Jive—captures the legendary Nicholas Brothers (Fayard & Harold) as they dazzle the audience with their incredible tap-dancing routine that was completely unrehearsed and recorded in one take. Pure… Wow!

SATURDAY NIGHT SWING | Here is a little jazzy rhythmic swing music for you to enjoy this evening. “Sing, Sing, Sing" is probably the most famous tune associated with Goodman, if not the entire Swing Era. However, it was originally a tune written by Louis Prima, and did feature vocals as the title suggests. Thus when it was imported into the band, it was originally intended as a feature for singer Helen Ward.

1937 Zenith 6S157 Zephyr Console 6 tube radio model. This is a superb example of the American Art Deco era for the late 1930’s. It was designed by John Stevens and is one of the most distinctive looking radios produced by Zenith. Stevens' design created a very simple wood cabinet, with heavy rounded edges and deep horizontal louvers that encircle the sides of the cabinet. This most distinctive design resulted in the Zenith Zephyr radio line up for 1937. The price in the first year of sale was $80.00 which is equal to $1,488.42 today in 2021. The Fight of the Century. The 1938 boxing rematch between American Joe Louis and German Max Schmeling is believed to have had the largest audience in history for a single radio broadcast. In 2005, the Library of Congress selected it for the National Recording Registry. NBC radio announcer Clem McCarthy delivered the blow-by-blow account of the fight, which lasted just two minutes and four seconds. It was a historic milestone — one that an estimated 70 million people listened to on their radios. We would love to hear what you think of this radio clip and if you would like to hear more radio broadcasts in the future. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
