‘My name is Sharon, I am a mother, grandmother, and proud resident of the South Bay. As someone whose family has lived here for decades, we have a deep connection to the Purple Museum.
It all started back in 1989—before the Museum was even built!—I got to see a preview of the Museum exhibits at the San Jose Convention Center. To this day, I can still remember how engaged my children were with the prototypes. I just knew we’d visit often children once it opened.
We did more than just visit; the Museum became a staple of fun and family bonding in our household. Now, my children bring their children, and we get to experience the wonders of the Museum all over again. That’s why we couldn’t be more excited for the next chapter in the Purple Museum’s history with the opening of the Exploration Portal next summer!’ - Sharon Hayano Blightman

My children fell in love with the Museum 14 years ago. Every time we’d return to visit the museum as a family we’d spend extra time in Bill’s Backyard, the tree house and the beehives always kept my son’s attention for hours! And when we heard that the Museum’s backyard was expanding to include a 4,000-square-foot outdoor space—the Exploration Portal—we could not be more thrilled. I know that the Exploration Portal is going to draw a whole new generation to the Museum, even though my kids have sadly aged out.
This is especially true as the Museum continues to play a part in rejuvenating downtown San Jose and serving all children, regardless of socioeconomic status.”

After years of dreaming, innovating, and planning, we are so proud to announce that a NEW, 4,000 square-foot exhibit is coming to the Museum’s backyard, the Exploration Portal!
It all started well before the Pandemic, when the City of San Jose agreed to donate half an acre of land for us to do an expansion of our outdoor learning environment. At that time, we decided to focus on developing the most visible, cohesive portion of the space into what is now Bill’s Backyard. This left an area behind the Builder Building next to the Cistern undeveloped. We are ecstatic to announce that the work we started with Bill’s Backyard will soon be finished. And we’re thrilled to share it with you now!
