A great 2024, a greater 2025.
A Year-end letter from your SLO Jazz Fed
The San Luis Obispo County Jazz Federation has enjoyed celebrating our 40th Anniversary year with you in 2024. We presented 9 concerts including The Idiomatiques, The Andy Martin Septet (Blues & The Abstract Truth), Young Jazz, The Ben Rosenblum Nebula Project, The Sam Hirsh Quartet featuring Ralph Moore, The 39th Annual Jazz Piano Showcase, Jamaal Baptiste Meets the Jazz Professors, Adam Levine & Metro and The Kait Dunton Quartet. These concerts presented diverse styles of jazz with local and national jazz artists. It was heartwarming to hear on different occasions that “this concert may have been your best yet”. We invite you to explore our website at www.slojazz.org and our YouTube playlist containing over 180 videos going back to 1983 ( https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-rHkAo9dvqsqKW1EfowBYrbQ4L3e_c6U&si=ho1XgB8SFaJQNjAZ ).
We’ll start off 2025 in grand fashion with the highly acclaimed New York City based Bill Mays Trio performing on Saturday, January 11th (tickets now available at https://www.my805tix.com/e/bill-mays-jazz-trio ). We will follow that on February 15th with the return visit of the Ernie Watts - Bill Cunliffe Duo. These are two concerts you definitely do not want to miss. Later in the year, we’ll also present our 40th Annual Jazz Piano Showcase which promises to be a gala event.
Since 1984, the Jazz Federation has awarded scholarships to promising high school and college students on an annual basis. Many of these students have gone on to careers in jazz. The “Young Jazz Scholarship Concert” will take place in March.
We thank you for your support over the years by being members, attending our concerts and engaging in our mission to “support and encourage the performance and appreciation of jazz, both professionally and educationally”. We share a common concern to help jazz - America’s great original art form - to thrive in San Luis Obispo County. We do this by sponsoring live jazz performances and jam sessions and by giving scholarships to young and talented student musicians. Please consider making a donation to our efforts. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and your donation may result in current or future tax savings for you.
Since April, 2022, we have presented concerts at the beautiful and spacious Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church. They have been wonderful to work with and we greatly appreciate that partnership. We also co-sponsor regular jam sessions at The Mark in downtown SLO each 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month (7-9 pm). The interaction of young and old players is beautiful to see and the venue is comfortable for a growing audience of listeners and players.
On behalf of the Jazz Fed Board, we wish you a Cool Yule and a swinging 2025!
Craig Updegrove
President, San Luis Obispo County Jazz Federation
