As the Eclipse approaches, I found a simple explanation of cultural Diné teachings on protocols and reasons for how we observe this event.

The Navajo word for a solar eclipse Jóhonaa'éí Daaztsą́ means “The Death of the Sun” according to Navajo traditional teachings. During a solar eclipse, many Navajo people will remain inside, fasting and praying. When the sun returns, it's considered a new birth and a recognized time to make resolutions.

During the eclipse, the moon (Tł’é’honaa’éí) will obstruct the sun (Jo'honaa'éí). In accordance with Diné teachings, one must not look at the eclipse, must respect the eclipse by maintaining stillness and reverence in their homes, and not partake of food and water during the period of the eclipse. At the conclusion of the eclipse, prayer is made using corn pollen in order to seek harmony among our families, relatives and Diné.

My heart has been heavy thinking about Cole Brings Plenty, a young native actor that went missing on Easter Sunday. I saw his father’s post on SM, asking for anyone that may know of his whereabouts. It tugged hard at my mom heart. He was found 5 days later, his vehicle abandoned and his body near a wooded area. My heart breaks for the Brings Plenty family.
A young beautiful soul, with a bright future, gone too soon. Cole modeled for a Fashion Show in Santa Fe during Indian Market last year. A face that is unforgettable.

I’m posting this for awareness, for acculturation. If your interested in statistics surrounding violence against Natives, take a few minutes to look it up. When it is my time to reunite with family that has gone before me, I would like to think that I left my mark. I would like to think that if nothing else, I have taught my kids to stand up for what they believe in. I encourage all young adults, not just my kids and not just Natives…look out for your friends. Speak up, make sure you are a voice in the room but act with integrity. Do what is right.
I’ve been thinking about what will be top of mind, as I pay reverence, during the eclipse. It will be the Brings Plenty family. This is a scared time for Navajos, something I will share in another post.

I know grief. When we lost my niece, we lost my sister. The MMIW movement should be changed to MMIP. Never the less, Cole Brings Plenty and Family…I see you, I feel you and I pray for you.
