🌟 Meet Afu, our Festival of Trees Patient Champion! 🎗️
Afu was a highly active athlete in junior high where he played football, basketball, and ran track. In the summers heading into high school, he lifted weights and trained daily with his brother and dad to prepare for the upcoming sport seasons.
In July of 2021, at the age of 14, his life changed. Afu started having some pain in his lower leg, primarily in his left calf. Being as active as Afu was, everyone assumed it was attributed to playing sports and possibly a minor injury. By the time football season rolled around, the pain hadn't gone away and it had increased where he had started to limp. His parents scheduled an MRI to identify exactly what was going on.
The results were much more serious than expected: Afu had a rare form of bone and soft tissue cancer. More testing showed it had spread to multiple areas, including his calf, lymph nodes, pelvis, abdomen, and lungs. His particular type of cancer is called Ewing sarcoma. It is known to have a low survival rate and a high rate of return. Afu and his family are committed to doing everything possible to give him the best possible chance of survival and beat cancer.
Afu started chemotherapy at Primary Children's Hospital right away. With his initial treatment plan, he endured 14 rounds of chemotherapy and 41 rounds of radiation in different areas of his body. Afu went into a brief remission in the 2022, but the cancer returned only 3 months later. His oncology team at Primary Children's Hospital recommended a different chemotherapy treatment plan, where he went through an additional 9 rounds of chemotherapy.
Reflecting on his journey, Afu shares, "At first, I wondered why this was happening to me. But as I saw how my family and other people reacted, I thought, maybe it's to bring people closer together, to strengthen my faith, and to deepen our family bond."
As of July 2023, Afu is once again in remission. He recently received clear scans three months after his last chemo treatment. While the future remains uncertain, he and his family are filled with hope, gratitude, love, and determination. Their story serves as a source of support and encouragement for other families facing similar challenges, letting them know they are not alone.

🎄 Get into the festive spirit with "How to Grow a Christmas Tree"! Authored by Connie Hanks and illustrated by Jessica Parker, this enchanting book captures the true story of compassion and giving that began in a Sandy neighborhood.
Step into the magical journey of children who, in 1976, embarked on a mission to make a difference in the lives of patients at Primary Children’s Hospital. Their humble initiative—a Fall Carnival—aimed to raise funds to donate a tree. Little did they know that their 'Cookie Monster Tree' would captivate hearts and become a sensational success! The girls spent $50 on the tree and it sold for $350!

Year after year, these children continued their delightful tradition of donating beautifully decorated trees. The book encapsulates their inspiring journey, a testament to the power of generosity and community spirit.

Join us at the Festival of Trees Gift Boutique to grab your copy of this charming book! Experience the joy of giving and the magic of the season through the touching story of "How to Grow a Christmas Tree". Don't miss out on this heartwarming tale that will warm your heart and inspire the spirit of giving this holiday season! 🌟📚🎁 # AGiftofLove

❤️Donations “From the Heart”❤️

Meet Teagan, Alex, Thatcher and Jack. Back in 2007/08 these “HEART HEROES” were babies and received incredible care at Primary Children’s Hospital. Each one of these boys have undergone heart surgeries and will continue to have surgeries, with one even receiving a heart transplant. Today these strapping young men are driving, dating and loving life. What a gift for their HEART MOMS to meet then, and become lifelong friends. They are all so grateful to still have each other after all these years.

These amazing young men are giving back by decorating and donating items for the Festival of Trees “Gift Boutique”. Their donation isn't just material; it's a heartfelt gesture that spreads joy and hope to those who receive it. Thank you for sharing pieces of your own hearts with our community!❤️🎄❤️

🌟 Celebrating Sisters Who Serve 🌟
Today, we want to shine a spotlight on two remarkable individuals who have dedicated their time and efforts to making Festival of Trees truly special. Meet Kaylene Mower and Cheryl Tarbet, a dynamic sister duo, with 34 and 33 years of service on the Executive Board, respectively

Both Kaylene and Cheryl have always served in KIDS KORNER. What's even more heartwarming is that these sisters have worked hand in hand all these years. So, what's their secret? It's simple: a deep-seated love for service, instilled in them by their parents. They've truly followed in their footsteps and have been blessed to have each other's unwavering support. Festival has been a family activity for them. Their parents, kids, grandkids and cousins have served along side them each year.

They are thankful for all the blessings they have received over the years, and say it’s way more than they have given.

Let's take a moment to express our gratitude and admiration for Kaylene and Cheryl - two extraordinary volunteers who embody the spirit of selfless service and community. 🙌👏 Thank you, Kaylene and Cheryl, for your 34th and 33rd years of unwavering dedication. You are an inspiration to us all! 💗

Festival of Trees wouldn't be possible without our incredible volunteers. Valeriano Ugolini's journey into the world of Nativity scenes began at the tender age of three. Hailing from a humble village in Italy, his artistic roots were nurtured by his grandfather. Val fashioned his toys using cans and nails, honing his imaginative prowess.

At the age of 11, Val was sent to Rome to serve as an Altar Boy at the Vatican. It was during these sacred duties that he had the privilege of gazing upon the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, spending countless hours lying on its hallowed floors.

A multi-faceted artist, Valeriano is not only a novelist, but also an accomplished painter, designer, woodcarver, and art connoisseur. He holds a Master's degree in Art History and is enamored by the diverse expressions of art, with a profound affection for religious art.

This year is special to him as we mark the 800th year of the Nativity. This tradition finds its origins in the devotion of Saint Francis of Assisi, who is credited with crafting the first nativity scene on that momentous Christmas Eve in 1223.
We are exceptionally fortunate to feature Valeriano's remarkable creations at the Festival of Trees. His meticulous work takes months to complete, resulting in exquisite Nativity scenes that are truly a sight to behold. His contribution for the Festival of Trees in 2023 is already finished, promising to be a breathtaking addition.

Valeriano believes in the true spirit of Christmas and holds a special place in his heart for children, especially his beloved grandchildren. He extends his gratitude to Primary Children’s Hospital for their dedication to serving the needs of children.

Meet Kathie Horman, one of Festival’s most dedicated volunteers. She started donating in 1971 when Festival was held in the Armory. Determined to become a decorator, Kathie first taught herself to tie a bow. That one bow started her 53 year journey of donating hundreds of trees, quilts and wreaths. Kathie feels forever grateful for Primary Children’s Hospital as one of her sons was diagnosed with asthma and Usher’s Syndrome. She is forever grateful for the care he received at the hospital.

Kathie’s husband, Chuck has supported her desire to serve over the years and built her a “Carriage House” which holds her precious carriages surrounded by shelves and shelves of Christmas decorations. In fact, one year Modern Display called her because they ran out of supplies for an event and asked to shop from her Christmas decoration stash. She reminesces about the year after having a baby and how she wasn’t feeling the Christmas spirit. She immediately put together a Christmas tree to donate to Festival of Trees and felt better.

Now at age 80, she has help from dear friends Aleatha Carpenter and Tim Goodman. Kathie has traveled the world searching for authentic and high quality decorations. She has decorated German wreaths and a Russion Trees just to name a few. This year she has a darling wreath entitled “Feliz Naughty Dog” decorated to sell at the 2023 Festival of Trees along with 20 other wreaths. She loves doing wreaths and is a “celebrity” in the Wreath Department.

Kathie Hormon, our dear Festival friend, thank you for serving the children at Primary Children’s Hospital!

Our Story

Holiday magic abounds thanks to the help of many hands and a generous community. In a 24-hour period, an empty exhibit hall transforms into a holiday winter wonderland of uniquely decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, playhouses, centerpieces, quilts, and gingerbread houses. Shops are filled with dolls, handmade crafts and quilts, freshly baked cookies and candies, an endless assortment of freshly-made fudge, hot scones, and cinnamon rolls.

Funds raised at Festival of Trees are a “A Gift of Love” to children at Primary Children’s Hospital. While the Festival of Trees lasts just four days, the spirit of this holiday tradition continues all year long in the hearts of those who volunteer and give to the Festival of Trees. Most importantly, the magic continues in the children who are cared for at Primary Children's Hospital.

Experience the holiday magic at the Festival of Trees by attending this year's event. Go to www.FestivalofTreesUtah.org to “Get Involved”, register to donate or to buy tickets.
