It’s the Lunar New Year and we wish everyone who celebrates - a peaceful, prosperous and joyous time ahead.

Especially to all the Snakes out there - everyone born in 1977, 1989 (Taylor Swift, we’re looking at you), 2001, 2013 - this is your year. Wear red, make lots of noise, eat well, and be fabulous. All in all, party hard - and think of us when you do :)

…for BRAND NEW GEAR! The Show (it’s convention season, baby!) was all the DJ community could talk about this week with all new speakers, microphones, lighting and controllers being launched by top brands - that they can’t wait to get their hands on - ooh new toys!!

We often replace our older equipment with the latest model gear as they come out each year - or supplement our current stash with new bells and whistles. Just like photographers, DJs love their equipment and love getting more!

A good weakness to have - because our clients are the ones who benefit the most. So this summer, look forward to seeing and hearing quality gear at your event. And also see your DJ’s face light up when you compliment them on having great performing tools of the trade. ;)

When it comes down to its bare bones, a wedding is where you gather friends and family to witness your declaration of love for each other - and then you treat them to a really good party!

Once all the formalities are done and the party finally hits, guests will enter “the PARTY TRIANGLE”; the three zones guests will alternate around for the rest of the night. The DANCEFLOOR, BAR and LOUNGE AREA. Focus on these three items and your guests will be talking about your party for years to come.

BAR: Load it with signature drinks, fun bartenders, cool lighting and decor (bookshelf backbar, and light up serving bar). Whatever you do, show off your style!

DANCEFLOOR: Get and Band or DJ who will knock the socks off your guests and keep them sweating right up to the last song. We can help with that!

LOUNGE AREA: This is where guests chill and catch up with people they haven’t seen in a while (a wedding is just like a reunion of friends and family). A photo booth is perfect here - a picture with an old friend is a perfect keepsake. And we can help with that too!

You’d be surprised if I told you - that “D.J.” stands for Disk Jockey; a person who plays, mixes and manipulates recorded music.

You’d also be surprised if you DID know and are trying to wrap your head around the fact that there are many who didn’t know (either you’re a DJ, great friends with one, or you’re old - you remember when radio was actually a thing).

Disk Jockey comes from early radio days. DJs curate playlists, introduce new songs, and engage with listeners through stories or facts about the music. We have three great RADIO DJs on the team, Spencer, Darla and Edwin - they can agree that they are the bridge between artists and the audience.

The CLUB DJs on our team - Sparx, Robbie, Curly, Ruben - have had the golden opportunity to be alive at a time to be able to use vinyl, CDs, and now digital means of playing and manipulating music. 

MOBILE DJs is what you’ve known us for. All of our DJs, come from different roots (radio, club) and passions for music (hip hop, dance, country, latin). What we do well at our core is knowing music, selecting it, mixing it, making announcements, and interacting with your guests. We’re here - at your service.

Hug a DJ, fist-bump one, or simply whisper “I know!” in their good ear.

First of all, we’d like to say that this is a no-strings-attached honest praise of one of our favorite vendors. We’ve worked for many years with this venue and love every aspect of it.

Villa and Vine sits in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. You can have your ceremony there, or offsite at a nearby location, like the SB Courthouse (see our recent post about the Mariachi procession). It’s also perfect for your guests to head off to another downtown location for an afterparty plan. 

Here is the typical flow for a wedding at Villa and Vine: You’ll have your ceremony on the outside terrace, then the drapes open (we can provide that) and guests head into the Arlington Room for cocktail hour. The terrace gets flipped to become a dining space and then dinner is back outside followed by dancing inside (we can go until midnight!).

May we suggest…KARAOKE!?

We’ve seen a lot of retro trends make a comeback - Champagne Towers, Disco Balls, and the Karaoke After Party. They’re all a lot like old songs you haven’t heard in a while, that sound fresh again. And with karaoke, this is literally true lol

With an after party set up, you could do full karaoke experience with a KJ host - just like karaoke night at a dive bar in your local college town - simple and straightforward.

OR you can do karaoke with a DJ option if you’re not sure the karaoke thing would work with your group of guests.

Either way, the party becomes it’s own animal, taking its tone uniquely from your guests. Take a look at our karaoke page for inspiration:

How do you start your planning process for music? How do you communicate your music key songs, likes and dislikes to your band or DJ?

All our couples get an online version of this, but all you have to do is DM us with the word “PLAN” and we’ll send over a free editable document for you to start organizing your thoughts on music. 

Then you can branch off and add Spotify/Apple Music playlist links to the document, or Youtube song links as inspiration. Share the form with your DJ, band or music provider - and even your wedding planner - to include cues and important songs in your wedding day timeline. Enjoy!
