PARKS & REC UPDATE
Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, July 6, 2021 the City of Sarasota Parks & Recreation District’s pools, summer camps, and all programming are on hold due to the upcoming Tropical Storm Elsa. The following recreational facilities have been closed:

- Arlington Park and Aquatic Complex, 2650 Waldemere St.
- Lido Pool, 400 Benjamin Franklin Dr.
- Nature Trails at Bobby Jones Golf Club, 1000 Circus Blvd.
- Payne Park Tennis Center, 2050 Adams Ln.
- Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 34th St.
- Bayfront Community Center, 803 N. Tamiami Tr.
- Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, 801 N. Tamiami Tr.

FOYER RENOVATION
The grand entrance to the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium is getting a complete renovation upgrade, along with both the men's and women's restrooms. This week the concrete flooring is being removed, along with the entrance walls getting a fresh and clean textured paint palette.

The Sarasota Municipal Auditorium offers the front foyer for ticket sales or registration along with a staging area for catering. This space is a definite must-have for any event!

About
The Sarasota Municipal Auditorium is one of the only remaining historic Art Deco buildings in Sarasota. It was built as a public gathering place with funding from President Roosevelt’s WPA program. Completed in 1938, it was designed by Thomas Reed Martin and Clarence A. Martin, and was listed with the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1995. It continues to serve the community.

The building had fallen into disrepair with cracks, water intrusion and many critical structural issues despite minor renovations over the years.

With a $500,000 historical preservation grant from the State of Florida, the new architect was hired to update and restore it. By relying on original photographs and drawings, the architect repaired the building with an emphasis on remaining true to the architects’ original intent.

New historically-accurate windows on the second floor were reproduced and installed. The façade was re-stuccoed and original glass blocks were re-secured, repointed and cleaned. Entrances were reimagined to be more universally accessible. The restrooms were extensively updated with a clean-lined aesthetic to complement but not copy the historic Art Deco style – differentiating the original design with new updates. Critical structural issues, water-proofing and new roofing were also addressed.

The Bayfront Community Center offers 2,000 SF for events. Designed as a waterfront wood frame structure abutting the auditorium space, structural issues were caused by material failure, termite damage, previous fires, hurricanes, and a “depression-era mentality” towards structural design. With essentially no foundation, a significant portion stood on sand with framing sitting on top of 8’x8’ beams laying on the ground. Though it had lasted for almost 100 years, the renovation took care to fix it. Additional updates included ADA-compliant bathrooms, kitchen, elevator and entrances.

The careful renovation was completed over a one-year period and has updated this iconic structure for future generations.

SRQ Magazine published the winners of their annual 4Walls Visionary Design Competition in the December 2020 issue of SRQ Magazine.

Silver Winning Project, Public Category: Sarasota Municipal Auditorium Renovation by Solstice Planning and Architecture - Johnathan Parks AIA!

The competition recognizes Sarasota architects who design buildings in four categories - commercial building, residential building, mixed-use building, public space or structure, and future building - focusing on the most impressive recent multi-unit and multi-story projects.
