Celebrated Artist Finishes Latest Mural at BOLD Lofts Sara*ota Apartment Building
Sara*ota, FL: Ringling College of Art and Design alumnus, Erik Jones, has finished his latest outdoor mural painting at the BOLD Lofts Sara*ota apartment building, located on 2nd St Between Adelia Ave and Goodrich Ave (adjacent to BOLD Cowork Sara*ota). This new mural, Ideas for Creation, was commissioned by BOLD to compliment the two existing murals, completed last year, as part of the building’s new construction public art requirement.
Similar to the previous two murals, artist Erik Jones drew inspiration from classical art work. While the previous murals were inspired by the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art’s sculpture garden - specifically the bronze reproduction of Michelangelo’s David and the bronze adaptation of The Winged Victory of Samothrace - the new mural references Michelangelo’s renown painting, The Creation of Adam.
Jones stated, “I wanted to continue this site-specific series, which already has obvious reference to the High Renaissance period, but in my own, contemporary style. I also wanted to select a piece which is conceptually similar to what BOLD is doing with their ‘live, work, play’ concept. BOLD is creating spaces for creatives and entrepreneurs to thrive. They are helping to provide that spark, and the means, for the creation of new and exciting things, right here in Sara*ota.”
Like the previous paintings, Ideas for Creation features Jones’ unique style of incorporating colorful swatches and geometric shapes, with human form and anatomy. Protruding from either side of the mural are two outstretched arms, with hands meeting at the center, which some observers may recognize from Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.
“For this piece, which overlooks BOLD Lofts’ pool deck, I wanted to create something that feels like an extension of the living space. The composition is made of overlapping, multi-color arches, circles, and other geometry, which almost feels like stacked-tiers of physical spaces and windows to other worlds.”
“It was really fun doing the mural during the quarantine period because I always had an audience. I would be up in the lift painting, and residents of BOLD Lofts were out on their balconies, watching and taking pictures.” stated Erik, adding, “I plan to come back this summer to do some interior murals as well.”
Erik Jones worked on the painting throughout the month of April, and BOLD plans to host a mural reveal gala once COVID-19 social distancing measures are no longer necessary. The party will be open to the public, and those who wish to attend should follow on Instagram or fb.com/boldloftsara*ota on Facebook, for more information on the future event.
