Sara*ota, FL: BOLD Cowork Sara*ota, part of the Downtown Sara*ota campus of commercial and residential rentals, announced today that it is launching a new “Community Empowerment Program” for local entrepreneurs. The program will provide workspace and business resources to young adults, ages 18 to 40, who are interested in starting or growing a small business, non-profit, or other community-oriented project, but lack the financial resources to get started.

The program is open to anyone who resides in either Sara*ota or Manatee counties, and individuals of minority identity are encouraged to apply, however non-minority individuals who have experienced personal hardship may also be eligible. Minority identity is inclusive of ethnic / tribal / racial identity, cultural identity, religious affiliation, linguistic ability, biological gender / gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality / citizenship, and refugee / other immigration status.

Applicants who meet admission requirements will receive complimentary “Cowork Memberships” (typically $150/mo) for either a 3- or 6-month period (depending on application type). Memberships can be extended for additional time, by re-applying within 30-days of expiration, and may total up to 12 months of complimentary membership to BOLD Cowork.

BOLD co-founder, Tom Frascone - who runs the day-to-day operations of the BOLD Sara*ota campus - said the new initiative is intended to help under-served members of the community take the first step to establishing their own businesses. It was inspired after the founders read Trevor Noah’s memoir, Born a Crime, which tells the story of his unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show.

“We know a lot of people dream about starting their own business, but they don’t have the resources or connections to make it happen. While some people can do it with savings, inheritance, or seed money from friends and family, not everyone has those options,” Frascone explained. “One of the biggest hurdles is having a dedicated, professional workspace. It really helps add legitimacy to a start-up, but it also helps an entrepreneur get in the right mindset. Just being around other entrepreneurs can be a huge motivator to help you push-through start-up obstacles, and it also allows for collaboration and community building.”

Jesse Biter, who owns the BOLD Sara*ota properties, said he can’t wait to see the new businesses and projects that arise from the program. “There’s a ton of talent with great ideas out there, but some people just don’t have the resources to get started,” Biter stated, adding, “Of course, BOLD itself isn’t a charity -- we’re a business as well. In designing it, we had to make sure the program would provide ample value to the participants, while also setting limits to ensure BOLD’s sustainability. By offering 3- and 6-month terms, with the opportunity to apply for term extensions, it makes sure participants are really in it to win it.”

Interested applicants can find a PDF application packet by visiting https://www.BOLDLWP.com and clicking the “Community Empowerment Application” link at the very bottom of the page, or by emailing sara*[email protected] to request a copy.

Celebrated Artist Finishes Latest Mural at BOLD Lofts Sara*ota Apartment Building

Sara*ota, FL: Ringling College of Art and Design alumnus, Erik Jones, has finished his latest outdoor mural painting at the BOLD Lofts Sara*ota apartment building, located on 2nd St Between Adelia Ave and Goodrich Ave (adjacent to BOLD Cowork Sara*ota). This new mural, Ideas for Creation, was commissioned by BOLD to compliment the two existing murals, completed last year, as part of the building’s new construction public art requirement.

Similar to the previous two murals, artist Erik Jones drew inspiration from classical art work. While the previous murals were inspired by the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art’s sculpture garden - specifically the bronze reproduction of Michelangelo’s David and the bronze adaptation of The Winged Victory of Samothrace - the new mural references Michelangelo’s renown painting, The Creation of Adam.

Jones stated, “I wanted to continue this site-specific series, which already has obvious reference to the High Renaissance period, but in my own, contemporary style. I also wanted to select a piece which is conceptually similar to what BOLD is doing with their ‘live, work, play’ concept. BOLD is creating spaces for creatives and entrepreneurs to thrive. They are helping to provide that spark, and the means, for the creation of new and exciting things, right here in Sara*ota.”

Like the previous paintings, Ideas for Creation features Jones’ unique style of incorporating colorful swatches and geometric shapes, with human form and anatomy. Protruding from either side of the mural are two outstretched arms, with hands meeting at the center, which some observers may recognize from Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.

“For this piece, which overlooks BOLD Lofts’ pool deck, I wanted to create something that feels like an extension of the living space. The composition is made of overlapping, multi-color arches, circles, and other geometry, which almost feels like stacked-tiers of physical spaces and windows to other worlds.”

“It was really fun doing the mural during the quarantine period because I always had an audience. I would be up in the lift painting, and residents of BOLD Lofts were out on their balconies, watching and taking pictures.” stated Erik, adding, “I plan to come back this summer to do some interior murals as well.”

Erik Jones worked on the painting throughout the month of April, and BOLD plans to host a mural reveal gala once COVID-19 social distancing measures are no longer necessary. The party will be open to the public, and those who wish to attend should follow on Instagram or fb.com/boldloftsara*ota on Facebook, for more information on the future event.

-- Additional Information About the Artist and Location --

Erik Jones received a bachelor’s degree in Illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2007, and has experienced worldwide success with his illustrations and paintings over the past decade. In recent years, Jones has had sold-out gallery exhibitions in cities including New York, Los Angeles, London, and Berlin. Forbes named Erik Jones one of their “Top 10 Emerging Artists,” and his work has been featured in Hi-Fructose Magazine, a prestigious, quarterly art publication.

"We are very proud to be selected by Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity, or DEO, to receive a $3.6 million Florida Jobs Growth Fund Grant to establish the SCF Center for Advanced Technology & Innovation. I was serving as the group’s chair at the time and we lined up our respective strategic plans and saw a regional need for technology skill development and entrepreneurship. [...] That discovery led to conversations with subject matter experts, visits to other incubators/accelerators in Florida and research as we honed the vision. Our search ultimately led to a meeting with SCF alumnus, Tom Frascone, and his partners at BOLD live, work, play and Vit•ture Operating Investors."
