sly, Isaac worked as a photojournalist at the Daily Herald in Provo, Utah, for four and a half years. He was a staff photographer from 2016-2017, chief photographer from 2017-2018, and collaborated with reporters, designers, editors, and freelance photographers as well as managed all of the newspaper’s visual demands as the photo editor and chief photographer from 2018-2020. Isaac’s work has earned numerous local, regional, national and international honors. His work has been recognized by Pictures of the Year International (POYi), The National Press Photographer’s Association’s Best of Photojournalism (NPPA’s BOP), the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, the Associated Press, College Photographer of the Year, and the Ohio News Photographers Association. While at the Daily Herald, Isaac was awarded best photographer in Utah twice by the Utah News Photographer’s Association (2017-2018) and by the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (2020). Isaac’s worked has appeared in publications such as ESPN, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, The Minneapolis Star Tribune, The Arizona Republic, in addition to several state and regional newspapers throughout the United States. In addition to editorial clients, Isaac also works with commercial clients and companies to create images to fit their marketing, advertising, and website needs both on location and in the studio. Born and raised in Piqua, Ohio, he graduated with a degree in Visual Communication in 2016 from Ohio University's photojournalism program. When not behind a camera, Isaac can be found mountain and road biking, skiing, cheering earnestly for the Cleveland Cavaliers, or exercising his life-long passion of singing in choir and theatre ensembles.

It is with an overflowing heart that I share that today is my first day working for Deseret News as their new Deputy Director of Photography. I am stoked beyond belief to get to work in such a role for a publication and a photo staff that I’ve long admired, and getting to do so in the state I hope to call my forever home. Utah has been so good to me since landing here from the Midwest in 2016, and I hope to serve Utah well for many years to come.

After three years of working in the Marketing and Communications Department at Utah Valley University, my time among the Wolverines has come to a close. Today was my last day working at the university, and this goodbye is bittersweet.

I have learned a full-time breadth of knowledge while working in this part-time position that has helped me broaden my photographic skills far beyond my photojournalistic roots. August Miller, Jay Drowns, Emily Muñoz, Kennedy Evans, along with the rest of the creatives in the department have been a joy to work alongside. I’ll never forget the first time I really started to sink my teeth into all the amazing things Photoshop can do outside of my somewhat basic previous knowledge, getting to dial in my studio-lighting skills during athletic photo days or on-location lifestyle assignments, learning from Jay how to use remote cameras (with strobes, too) for sporting events, or pumping out hundreds of professional headshots throughout my three years at UVU.

On another note, I will also be largely scaling back my freelancing in preparation for my next step. What that next step is, I’ll share on Monday. For now, I want to celebrate all the good Utah Valley University and its great staff have done for me and my career. And for one last time, .

The night sky as seen from our campsite at Yuba Lake State Park on July 15th. *(First photo is split in half in frames 2 and 3 to magnify it in hopes they can be viewed side-by-side)

The northwestern shoreline of Yuba Lake is one of my favorite places to cool off during the summer. I try not to force photos at all when I’m not actively working, but I couldn’t resist these stars. I’m hoping to get out into nature again soon.

Tiny Hero held its second Walk/Run/Bike for CDH Race in Utah this past Saturday, as well as races in other states both in-person and virtually. Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernias (CDH) occur in about 1 in every 3,600 babies, and the annual race aims to raise awareness and funds to help treat CDH.

As we make our way through the first few days of spring, I wanted to share this snowy shot from February. However, the snow is still very much coming down here in Utah. I explored this area with my parents when they were in town, and I relish getting to share beautiful sights like this when I am physically with them (and sending along pictures from my adventures to them when they’re not around).

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2023 Annual Meeting (Part II of II)

Last week I had the opportunity to be a part of a team of photographers tasked with covering the annual meeting for AAOS, this year held in Las Vegas, and creating images to be used in various promotional capacities by the organization. One of my favorite things about photography is getting to interact with experts in other fields, and there was a dizzying wealth of knowledge to be had throughout the conference. I may not have understood much of the medical jargon, but it was an exciting atmosphere of learning to be a part of for four days.

Though my assignments were events more on the periphery rather than the evening games themselves, it was a really cool opportunity to get to see parts of the spectacle of a weekend “from the inside.”

I recently put together an updated promo video for the on-going fundraiser the Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ has been having to help restore, renovate, and expand the 130-year-old church in downtown Provo. Find out more about the fundraiser here: @KeepingTheFaithProvo On a personal note, this church is near and dear to my heart because it is where I sing with the Utah Valley Interfaith Choir. The choir and church has been my singing haven post-college. I’ve made wonderful memories singing and hanging out with my fellow choir members, and the church and its congregation have always been open and extremely supportive. It makes my heart happy when I can lend my professional expertise to hopefully help propel forward a place and organization that has given so much to me personally. And one final note: The past six weeks or so have proven to be perhaps the busiest/longest stretch of work I’ve had so far in my career. I’ve been out and about creating content faster than I can keep up with posting it without total burnout, and I hope to get back to posting on Instagram on a semi-regular basis (whatever that ends up being).
