One last teeny tiny bouquet from my garden, for my dear friends, who hosted our Friendsgiving this year 🧡

There are a few flowers that are cold-hardy and don’t even flinch when the temps drop. These flowers are often grown in early spring, and will be the first to bloom, after all the tulips and daffodils do their thing.

Snapdragons and stock are the flowers I’m referring to from this bouquet.

I grew stock for the first time this year, and seeing how well it does as an end-of-season fall crop, I will definitely be doing a late summer planting of them in 2024 to harvest for fall.

Stock comes in SO MANY colors, but the one shown in this bouquet was a purple variety. I grew some brownish-pink ones in the spring that would be incredible in a fall bouquet for next year.

Snapdragons also come in tons of colors, and for this bouquet there were white, yellow, and magenta with orange centers. While snapdragons left in the ground as perennials won’t continue to make flowers when’s its wintertime, the plant itself may remain green into winter until warmer temps and more sunlight encourage new growth and blooms come spring.

There were a few marigolds that managed to survive the frosts, but most of them are dead by now, which is a shame because their orange and yellow blooms are gorgeous in fall bouquets.

Last, we have the sweet little white and yellow native daisy. I have so many of them still thriving in my garden. They don’t seem to mind the cold one bit. This was my first season growing them so I have no idea how long they will continue to bloom.

I would love to have bouquets available this time next year, made from flowers grown right here in Sayville, so that’s definitely the plan for 2024.

Thank you Anna, Keenan, and Daisy, for hosting the best Friendsgiving ever! I’m so happy I was able to give you the last of Terry Street Flowers for 2023!

Happy Thanksgiving, to you all!!! 🍂🦃🧡💐🍗🌼🍁🌾

Happy Birthday, to my mom!

I’m in NJ today to be with my mom for her birthday. She is the recipient of the first *official* summer bouquet of 2023 💐 By official, I mean dahlias 😉

My mom taught me everything I know about gardening.

She is retiring this year from her 30 year old landscape design business, Mary’s Gardens.

I worked for her doing installs and maintenance for many years, learning all the valuable information I use for my own business today. Thanks, Mom!

I love you, Mom! Gus and Vivie and I adore you, and together we make the best memories life has to offer. I hate that we live so far apart, but at least you’re only a (sometimes very long) car ride away.

Love, B

First day of summer?

I don’t know about you, but I’m a little disappointed with this weather in NY today ☹️ Cold and windy, and lots of rain in the forecast.

We need the rain so I’m trying to be grateful for it, but I don’t like the bad vibes of a cold first day of summer.

Hopefully, it’ll be hot and sunny soon enough with lots of gorgeous flowers that benefited from this gloomy weather.

Till then, summer flowers, I’m dreaming about you 🥰 🌻🌼🌸

It’s the last week of spring flowers 🌸

I’ll miss the ranunculus and anemones, but now I have all the summer flowers to look forward to, yay! 🌻

So many seasonal changes to adapt to in flower growing. So many new challenges to adapt to when the weather doesn’t cooperate, ie rain where are you???

I’m almost done with planting season. My neighbors keep commenting how I’m in the garden from sun-up to sun-down. If only the flowers could plant themselves 🤗

Flower Stand Update 💐

I’ve gotten so many inquiries this week about flowers. So much going on with Teacher Appreciation Week, Mother’s Day, etc. Flowers are such a lovely way to show how much you care about someone, and I love that fresh cut flowers are on everyone’s mind.

I don’t currently have enough flowers blooming for bouquets. I know, such bad timing.

Last year Mother’s Day was later AND I still had tulips and daffodils available, but this year we had a lot of really hot spring days and the tulips are totally done.

Flower growers are at the mercy of Mother Nature. There are tricks and tools to stretch the seasons with flowers, and next year I’ll have to get creative and put some of those good ideas to work so I can provide my community with flowers non-stop all season.

I’m going to be purchasing some flowers tomorrow for my kids teachers, and perhaps I’ll find some flowers that are in the style of “Terry Street Flowers” to put in the Flower Stand for the weekend. I’ll keep you all posted on that 💐

Flower Care Tips 🌷Tulip Edition

When ever you buy flowers, give the stem ends a trim before putting them into a clean vase with water 💧 trim off as much or as little as you’d like to fit your vase.

Change the water every few days and they will last longer 💐

Keep cut flowers away from direct sunlight or a heat source 🌞

Tulips will continue to grow after being cut. How neat is that! So after a few days you may notice that they are flopping over. You can re-trim the stems to the desired length, or just let them do their thing. It’s a personal preference if you like your tulips tidy or wild looking. They also like to grow towards the light so if you change the direction of the vase every few days they will maintain a more consistent upright form.

Enjoy your tulips!
