My latest thoughts on today’s severe weather setup….

⚠️ Yet Another Severe Weather Day ⚠️

Today’s forecast is similar to what we’ve seen recently. Storms are expected to develop in Wyoming around 2–3 PM, push into western Nebraska by 5–6 PM, and move out by about 9 PM.

Yesterday’s stronger cap kept storms from getting going—but today, the cap looks a bit weaker. That means storms have a better shot at forming, though a repeat of yesterday’s quiet outcome is still possible.

💨 Main threats:
• Strong winds
• Isolated large hail
• A low chance of a tornado

Stay alert and keep checking for updates throughout the afternoon and evening!

UPDATE on today’s severe weather threat:

Severe storms are likely in central Nebraska, with a few severe storms possible in the northeastern portions of the Panhandle. There is an ENHANCED risk of tornadoes - some possibly strong - for the Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings, and Broken Bow areas, with an ENHANCED risk for large hail - some very large - for areas east of a Chadron to North Platte to McCook line. Stay weather aware!

⚠️ Multiple weather concerns over the next 48 hours across our area.

⛈️ Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across the region tomorrow (Monday) afternoon and evening. Large hail and damaging winds would be the primary threat. The highest threat of severe storms looks to be east of a Chadron to Arthur line. Severe storms are possible as far west to the Lusk-Torrington-Sidney areas.

🔥 A Red Flag WARNING for extreme fire danger is in effect for areas along and south of the North Platte River valley. S-SE winds gusting to 35 mph and low relative humidities will lead to extreme fire behavior. DO NOT BURN IN THESE AREAS!

And, finally (don’t shoot the messenger)…

💨 A High Wind WATCH is in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening for SE Wyoming and the southern NE panhandle. Wind gusts of 55-70 MPH are possible in these areas.

Continue to monitor the latest forecasts!

For those without power, including Bridgeport, Bayard, Gering and surrounding areas, PLAN for the worst and HOPE for the best!

The worst—power may be out for a couple of days, possibly longer. (It takes time and resources to repair this much damage.)

The best—power comes back on early!

Folks, this storm is not about over. It’s just getting started. This rapidly strengthening low pressure system will move slowly NE overnight putting our area in a wrap-around for heavy snow overnight. In areas of heavy snow, BLIZZARD conditions WILL occur!

To recap:
❄️ Snow (or rain) will INCREASE in coverage and intensity after dark.
💨 Winds will INCREASE (the strongest winds are yet to come) in intensity after dark.

🚧 AVOID TRAVEL if you can.

04/06/2024

Concerned about higher snow accumulations in the Scottsbluff/Gering, Torrington, and Bridgeport areas. With these winds, BLIZZARD conditions will be possible. This is a very tricky forecast and lots will change. Please stay tuned!
