Located on Marshall King Lake, just down the road from the Westwood Golf Course, The Ruby Loft can help you launch your new life together or celebrate a lifetime of memories. It is a traditional Gambrel Roof barn. The oldest known Gambrel Roof structure is Harvard Hall at Harvard University built in 1677. In the early 18th century the gambrel roof became popular for new construction in the Netherl
ands, influenced by the double-pitched gable-hip roofs common in the Dutch East Indies. The style spread to England, and eventually to the United States. Our family settled Indiana before it was a state - then known as part of The Northwest Territory. John and Nancy Littel (my great-great-great grandparents) floated down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh and landed on the North side of the river, just before The Falls of The Ohio. They originally settled around the Silver Creek area and, as the family grew, expanded up into what is today Scott County. John was called "Long-knife" by the Shawnee Indians. That's what they called many pioneers who were a good shot. His family had immigrated from Scotland to Delaware; then New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and finally Indiana. It is believed that Nancy was part Indian. It is unclear if this originated from the Shawnee, located around Pittsburgh, or Cherokee that lived in the Carolinas, where her family originally lived.
