The Intuitive Painting Mindset

Stan Kurth

August 11 - 13

In this workshop, you’ll become acquainted with the intuitive painting mindset. In her book Mindset, Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck proposes that human qualities are not fixed—they can be cultivated. People can grow and improve in any area, including sports, art, music, business, parenting, or relationships. This growth also applies to intellectual skills.
With this in mind, you’ll begin to shift from a fixed mindset that separates traditional representational painting from abstraction. It is entirely possible to understand and incorporate both approaches in your work.
Using various mark-making tools, watercolor, and gouache, lessons will begin without reference or preconceived ideas.
You’ll create paintings from arbitrary design elements and bring them to completion using principles of design. The goal is to develop a painting that aligns with your personal aesthetic—whether representational or nonobjective. The only criteria: no reference, and a willingness to let the process guide the outcome.

Dramatic Light in Pastel

Corey Pitkin

ONLINE on Zoom | 3 Saturdays Aug 9,16 and 23 2025 | 10am-1pm Arizona Time (*always on Mountain Standard Time) | recording will be available for 2 months

Artists have been using light to create drama in their work for centuries. Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Wyeth, and countless others have elevated light from an afterthought to a protagonist in their work. Dramatic light creates compositions with immediate emotional impact that grab your viewer’s attention from across the room. Using both historical and contemporary examples, master pastelist Corey Pitkin will demonstrate how he uses light to create work that is both emotional and mysterious. This 3-day workshop will include lectures on historical examples and how light affects color, a live photo shoot with a model, pastel demonstration, and group critique of assignments. Students will be provided a photograph to work from but are encouraged to bring their own reference images.

Fundamentals of Landscape Painting

Paul Steele

August 4 - 25

In the world of making paintings, there are a lot of terms such as modeling the form, cast shadow vs. form shadow, value, and temperature! it goes on and on. One of Steele’s favorites is “turning an edge with temperature.” What in the world does that mean? After this class the student will be able to demonstrate it! Learning to paint is all about seeing. Through direct observation we see shapes, colors and texture. Once seen, we then learn to emulate these forms in an accurate way, taking work to the next level. Be ready to work and learn and have fun doing it! Paul will demonstrate his technique for landscape painting and provide plenty of one-on-one instruction as well. Everybody will create paintings from photographs. It’s a fun, creative class and a real learning experience. Oil painting is recommended; acrylic and watercolor are fine too.

Luminous Portraits: Impastos and Glazes

Gustavo Ramos

July 28 - 30

What is it that gives a masterful oil painting its jewel-like quality, mysterious luster, and lasting freshness? The extensive properties of oil paint have enabled the creation of iconic portraits that prove difficult to decipher. Ramos will walk students through his award-winning portrait method from the ground up. Working from the model, Ramos will demonstrate his unique way of dissecting visual information into a rich and dynamic likeness. Students will experience Ramos’ sensitive color palette and particular brush-handling technique to lay thick impastos and translucent shadows. One-on-one instruction will be given to internalize the principles of light, structure, shape design, tonal abstraction, and broken color. Discussions and focused time on the easel will equip the student with an arsenal to create luminous professional portraits.
