Seeing and Using Design to Capture Your Subject

Mitch Baird

November 17 - 21

What does the act of ‘seeing’ mean for an artist? Discover the answers in this workshop as the specifics of observing a subject, interpreting the visual elements, and executing it all onto canvas are explored. We will discuss the way the optics of the eye work as well as seeing light, form, atmosphere, and space. The fundamental principles of painting - composition, drawing, value, color, and edges- will also be stressed. Each day we will begin with a demo covering the principles mentioned above, followed by a fun day of painting and personal instruction. Students may choose to work from their favorite photos and field sketches or set up still life subjects throughout the workshop. Individual attention will be a high priority as well as laughs and lots of enthusiasm! Demonstrations will be in oil, but acrylic is welcome.

Expressive Mark Making

Tara Will

November 17 - 20

Mark making is the fingerprint of the artist. Through specialized exercises, we will work on developing a sense of self-awareness, which will explore why we make marks the way we do. What do we lean towards? What are we attracted to? How can we use our natural inclinations to our advantage? Students will focus on directional mark-making with a strong emphasis on how form dictates the direction of the mark. In this class, we will also revisit the basics of value, color, and composition. Students will be working from their own references, so please be sure to have a variety of references to choose from. Demos will be in pastel, but the concepts are universal. Oils are also welcome.

Anatomy for Figurative Artists: Major Muscle Masses. w/Critiques

Alicia Ponzio

ONLINE ZOOM | 8 Mondays | Oct 6,13, 20, 27, Nov 3,17,24, Dec 1, 2025 | 10am-1pm Arizona Time

Alicia N. Ponzio is an experienced figurative sculptor and instructor, as well as the former director of Anatomy and Ecorche Programs at the Florence Academy of Art. She has taught artistic anatomy extensively to 2D and 3D artists as well as at Pixar Studios and The University of Calgary Medical School. Alicia creates figurative compositions in bronze, often using her knowledge of anatomy to work from imagination. This course is designed to offer students information that applies directly to their artistic practice and further their understanding of the forms that are inherent in the human body. The course is designed to be taken either on its own as a study of the muscular masses of the human form, or as a follow up to the study of skeletal structures. Each week, Alicia will begin with a lecture using visual media to illustrate the concepts discussed. After the lecture, Alicia will narrate a pre-recorded demo showing how to complete the homework assignment for the week. For the final hour, Alicia will offer feedback to those students who have submitted homework. Between lectures, students may submit questions or engage in discussions on the Padlet virtual message board, established for the class and Alicia will publish notes and useful images there as well.

Landscape Painting Simplified, A Different Approach to Understanding Value

Kimball Geisler

November 10 - 13

This workshop focuses on developing a strong framework for tackling the subject of value. Students will spend time understanding two different aspects of value: form and design. They’ll learn what these aspects are, how they complement one another, and how they detract from one another. Using value as a “lens” through which we can view other concepts in painting, students will have a new perspective on other areas such as color, edges, composition, and atmosphere. By the end of the workshop, students will have a new, powerful tool in their kit that can be broadly applied to any subject, style, or approach that they may take.
