Aesthetic Tools for Landscape Design

Jill Carver

February 2 - 6

Jill will discuss concepts and techniques aimed to resolve and strengthen motifs and improve design, from initial ‘thought boards’ to actual planning methods. She will illustrate how unity and variety are used to create overall harmony. The class will explore the aesthetic principles of motif, notan, shape, value and color management, and the use of grids or armatures to divide up the canvas space and help with placement. She will discuss the science of how we see and how we can control eye movement. Jill will structure the workshop through set exercises, lectures, demos, and brainstorming discussions. Students will be working from their own visual material as well as that provided.

Painting the Full Portrait

Mary Qian

January 26 - 29

The goal of the class is to teach using value, color and edge as three essential tools to create naturalistic human portraits. The class will start with a dramatic lighting setup for students to use the power of value, using a limited palette. The day one demo will cover the geometry of the facial structure in a facet-like way, and how light describes the facial structure, while the value structure describes the quality of lighting. The day will start with an introduction of colors. There is the actual mixing of color, vs applying the colors. Instead of concentrating on what exact colors should be used, Mary would like to concentrate on the concept of color composition or the relationships among colors—it should be able to be varied by the subject and by preference. The second demo will show how to create form using color temperature shifts under a flatter lighting situation. The day will start with introducing different techniques of creating different kinds of edges by demonstration and showing images. The third demo will show how edges can change the paint quality of a painting. All three elements are completely intertwined. The entire approach is very much observation based, but at the same time with constant deliberate picking and choosing. The fourth day we will create naturalist portraits using all these tools. Mary can do a demo during the morning, or let students work the full day. It can be decided by the students. She will work with each student one-by-one during their painting time.

Portrait Sculpture: Short and Long Studies

Alicia Ponzio

January 19 - 23

Alicia Ponzio will be offering a weeklong intensive workshop focusing on portrait modeling from life. The week will begin with quick studies lasting 3 hours each. Students will practice blocking in the portrait and have the opportunity to study from different models, creating quick, energetic sketches. After 3 sketches, they’ll settle into a long study of one of the models at ¾-life size scale. The shorter studies allow the students to explore various facial types and practice the important, early stages of the portrait a few times before digging into the longer study, which affords them time to capture more subtlety and form modeling with the clay. Through lecture, demonstration and individual feedback, Alicia will cover basic clay technique, working with an armature, the process for constructing a portrait, as well as relevant anatomical landmarks of the human head and neck. The elements of the “likeness” will be discussed. All experience levels are welcome in the class. Casting or firing the clay will not be covered in class, though students are encouraged to do this independently. In this class, students will work with water-based clay on wooden armatures.
