Stan Miller

March 24 - 27

In this workshop the instructor will briefly demonstrate every morning. Students will primarily work from instructor handouts, moving from painting a simple portrait to more complex portrait projects, throughout the four days. Fundamentals of realism, impressionism and abstraction will be briefly demonstrated and discussed during the class. The instructor will individually visit each student as each class project is being completed. Stan will also help students that have photos, edit their portrait photos. Choosing a paintable subject that matches one’s skill level, technique, color, creating mood, understanding composition and design, portrait backgrounds will be addressed as well as a variety of other topics. All students are encouraged to bring a few photos of portraits they may desire to paint after the workshop is over. Logic of Painting

Regina Lyubovnaya

March 24 - 28

In this five-day course, students will approach still-life and portrait painting not from the perspective of technique or dogma, but from a multiplicity of choices. Our focus will be on understanding why certain approaches are more effective and beautiful than others. We will learn to identify the task before us and view it as a field of open possibilities, recognizing that there is always more than one way to solve it. To paint with logic and understanding is to remain open and receptive. Simply being told how to solve a problem is just following someone else’s steps. Regina will explain how painting solutions emerge from an understanding and perception of light, space, and form. By employing value, color, edges, brushstrokes, and paint quality, we can translate visual information into beautiful paintings that are guided by our visual aesthetic ideas.

Painting the Miracle with Pastels: Figure and Portrait

Allen Garns

February 21 - 22

Walt Whitman wrote, “To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle, every cubic inch of space is a miracle”. That’s what we are going to do, learn to better see and express the miracle of light and form. There is no real secret to doing this. It always comes back to practicing and deepening your understanding of fundamentals. Value, color, shape, and composition will be emphasized and how they can be used to create light and form and how those elements relate to the human form. Additionally, we will be discussing materials and techniques. We will work from photos and a live clothed/costumed model. Through it all, we will talk about seeing the miracles before our eyes.

Alla Prima: Painting the Portrait and Figure from Life

Romel de la Torre

March 17 - 21

Watercolor Line and Wash - Sketching from Photos

Stevie Denny

February 15

Line and Wash is a popular technique for beginner watercolor artists, as well as seasoned painters, to capture the essence of memorable scenes, create a memento of a special time or place visited, or even serve as a sketch for a larger work. This one-day course will guide students through the entire process. Each class will start with a sketch demo that includes composition and drawing. Students are encouraged to bring their own reference photos to class to create a painting; and Stevie will also have digital photos available. After the demo, students will work on their own projects, while Stevie provides individual attention and coaches students as needed. Subjects covered will include supplies, color theory, line and wash techniques, layout, and drawing; as well as some lettering tips for those who want to use their sketch as a journaling page, card or gift.
