Second "legacy" gravel event to go on a hiatus - Rotted Vermont announced the same earlier this week. Hmmm......

Howdy friends, you may have noticed that we have not set a date or posted about the 2023 Opal Wapoo. We needed some time to process the future of Opal Wapoo, and all that goes along with it. We have decided to put the Opal Wapoo Gravel Experience on indefinite hiatus.

When we created Opal Wapoo, our main goal was to bring the cycling community to our community of Excelsior Springs. We truly believed (and still do) that the gravel roads here are unlike any other in the country. We feel proud to have accomplished that - our hearts swell hearing stories from the ride and of packed businesses on race day and seeing Airbnb’s filled with bike racks on cars. We even had some out-of-town riders make the news!

With the growing popularity of the gravel scene comes higher expectations, higher risk and a more demanding workload. We are constantly seeking the right balance between risk and reward. We have taken on additional weight in our careers over the last 2 years and have to admit it has cheated our ability to produce Opal Wapoo at the level we would like.

We have made so many new friends all because of Opal Wapoo. We have ridden the highs and the lows of the Opal Wapoo experience right along with you. We do not take this decision lightly, and there is a bit of heartbreak involved in this decision.

Finally, THANK YOU! These past 5 years of Opal Wapoo have provided some of the best memories of our life. So many stories, so much love and support from sponsors, volunteers and most of all the gravel community that descended on Excelsior Springs to ride some of the most challenging gravel out there. Just because there isn't a race doesn't mean our gravelhood is closed.

Great local race - C4 is one of the best!

ATTENTION: The C4 Mountain Bike Race will be taking place in Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area on Saturday, November 12th from 9:00 am to approximately 12:00 noon. The race route consists of the western section of the Spur Cross Trail from the main trailhead area out to the western boundary gate and from there down into Cave Creek Regional Park. While this trail will not be closed to other visitors, we strongly recommend that hikers and especially folks on horseback either use other trails or schedule your visit for a different time. THANK YOU!

New this year- the Nogales Classic is our state road race! We've also switched up the event format. You'll pick your distance (40, 60, 80 miles) and then get scored in an age bracket: 12-14, 15-18, 19-24, 25-34, 35-44, 44-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75+ for men and women. And yes, we can still get this to count for upgrades! The top three in each category will receive a state championship medal, and the winners are eligible for the coveted champions jersey.

Support youth cycling - THRIVE does good work. Thrive Youth Cycling

We have a costly cyclocross campaign ahead as the races where call ups points are available (to not start in back again) are all back east. We will target two of the seven and then national championships December 9 in Hartford, CT. Cyrus has been working hard ever since last year when he was 20th in Chicago starting close to the back and the race distance cut in half. We will post a fundraiser soon and give you all the opportunity to be involved in Cyrus’s future hopes to be a pro cyclist.
