(Save & Share) This is probably the hardest challenge most couples face—but don’t talk about enough.

Regardless of your wedding budget, there's still an emotional rollercoaster after getting engaged, filled with complete sticker shock.

Weddings are expensive. And they’re not the same as they were when your parents got married. So if your parents are helping financially, chances are they'll feel the sticker shock too.

But my friends, as defeated as you may feel at times, please remember: it’s all about the decisions you make—and tuning out the noise from everything else.

Get crystal clear on your priorities as a couple, and build your budget around those first.

1. Start with a real number: Know your actual total budget, including any contributions from family. Don’t start booking your venue until you know what you're working with. If you have no idea what a realistic budget looks like, send me a direct message—I'm happy to share some sample budgets.

2. Each make a Top 3 list: You and your partner should each list the three things that matter most to you (maybe it’s food, photography, venue vibe, music, etc.). Then compare and agree on your shared priorities.

3. Spend where it counts: Allocate more of your budget to what matters most and scale back on the rest. For example, if florals aren’t a top priority, go minimal there and put that money toward a great photographer or band.

4. Limit the guest list: Fewer guests = fewer chairs, meals, tables, rentals, etc. Cutting even 10–20 people can make a big difference.

5. Be honest with vendors: Ask them what’s possible within your range. If they can’t work within your budget, ask if they’re comfortable recommending someone who can.

6. Be flexible with dates or details: Off-peak dates, simpler menus, or skipping certain elements can save thousands—without sacrificing the experience.

7. Track everything: Spreadsheets are your best friend. It’s so easy for little expenses to sneak up—like décor, tips, dress alterations, and more.

8. Don’t try to please everyone: Focus on creating a celebration that feels like you two, not what Pinterest, Instagram, or relatives expect.

"Maddison and Jason's wedding was a dreamy fusion of gothic elegance and timeless romance. Their venue glowed with flickering candles and ornate candelabras, setting an intimate, ethereal tone. Maddison looked stunning in a classic white ball gown for the ceremony, but surprised guests with a dramatic wardrobe change—emerging in a striking black dress for their grand entrance. Their first dance, set against a swirling haze, felt like something out of a fairytale. A vintage-style cake added the perfect nostalgic touch, and the night ended with joyful dancing and unforgettable memories shared with loved ones." ~ Planner Adriana

"Caitlin and Eric’s Arizona wedding at The Sanctuary on December 7th was a breathtaking celebration filled with love, tradition, and thoughtful personal touches.

Their day began with a beautiful Catholic ceremony at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where they exchanged vows surrounded by close family and friends. The peaceful ambiance of the church set the perfect tone for the rest of the day, blessing their union in a way that seamlessly complemented the elegance of their Arizona destination wedding.

The evening continued with a romantic outdoor dinner under the stars, where a serenade singer delighted guests with smooth melodies, adding an intimate and enchanting touch to the celebration.

As the night unfolded, the energy shifted to the ballroom, where a full live band and DJ kept the dance floor alive. Guests enjoyed an unforgettable night of music and dancing, creating memories that would last a lifetime. During cocktail hour, a beer b***o served up refreshing brews, while late-night snacks paid homage to Caitlin and Eric’s roots with mini Juicy Lucys and Chicago-style hot dogs—perfectly capturing their love for home.

Caitlin and Eric’s wedding at The Sanctuary was a beautiful fusion of heartfelt details, cultural nods, and unforgettable moments—an extraordinary celebration to remember." ~Planner, April

“Stephanie & Tyler’s wedding day at the Royal Palms was equal parts romantic and fun. They included each and every guest to make their friends & family feel special throughout their day. After the most beautiful wedding ceremony that incorporated their parents as well as closest friends & family, the fun began at cocktail hour with two of the cutest wedding guests in town - Nacho & Corona! Their candlelit dinner on Vernadero Lawn was full of love from their bridal party members & parents alike. After dinner, guests moved inside for an epic dance party and fun including a bounce house photobooth and a Chicago staple - ! Stephanie & Tyler poured so much love into their guests and their guests gave it right back. This was a true testament to Stephanie & Tyler and the love they share. I could not be happier to have been included in their wedding day!” -Planner Alicia

The Most Important Decision You’ll Make Before Your Wedding

There comes a point in your wedding planning when a single decision can make all the difference in how much you enjoy your big day.

Regardless of your planning style, personality, or level of organization, you have to make a conscious choice to shift from *planning* mode to *enjoyment* mode.

The sooner you can do this, the better—but for most couples, it happens around the rehearsal. And it's not easy. Your brain has been in planning mode for months; it's familiar, even comfortable. Letting go? That feels uncertain.

As a lifelong Event Planner, I get how hard this shift is. But if you can mentally push that button—and encourage your inner circle to do the same—you’ll enjoy your wedding 100x more.

Even with the best planning and vendor teams, unexpected moments will arise. But if you’ve surrendered to the moment, you can trust us to handle the details while you embrace and enjoy every second of this once-in-a-lifetime weekend.

Fellow wedding vendors—what advice do you give couples to help them step out of planning mode and into celebration mode?

"Spencer and Jordan's wedding took place at the iconic Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, Arizona. Their rooftop
ceremony was nothing short of breathtaking, with the golden sun casting a warm glow as it gleamed on the
radiant couple. Spencer’s grandfather officiated the ceremony, adding a heartfelt touch, while the special
cord of three strands ceremony symbolized the strength of their union. Surrounded by loved ones and
accompanied by the enchanting melodies of a string quartet, the couple stood against a vibrant Arizona
sunset that made the moment truly magical. The chic event design featured elegant black accents, allowing
Spencer's white gown to take center stage, a vision of timeless beauty against the vibrant Arizona sunset.
The celebration continued in the Sands building, where guests enjoyed an elegant dinner surrounded by
thoughtfully curated decor. The couple’s smiles radiated pure joy, filling the evening with a sense of magic
that resonated with everyone in attendance. Friends and family danced the night away, creating memories
to match the beauty of the day. From the awe-inspiring rooftop views to the electric atmosphere of the
reception, Spencer and Jordan’s wedding was a perfect blend of sophistication and heartfelt celebration,
marking the beginning of their happily ever after." ~ Planner, Erin

Things That May Surprise You When Planning Your Wedding

Limited Set-Up Time
Most venues allow vendors only two hours for setup. While this may seem short, experienced professionals handle it efficiently.

Catering Managers May Change
Venues change staff frequently. Your catering manager may leave, transfer, or go on leave. Since contracts are with the venue, not a person, working with a Wedding Planner ensures a smooth transition.

Officiants Often Skip Rehearsals
Many officiants charge extra for rehearsals, but their presence isn’t crucial. The key aspects—lining up, walking in, and placement—are handled by your Wedding Planner.

Bridal Party Changes
It’s common for members to drop out due to time or financial commitments. Don’t take it personally; it doesn’t reflect their feelings for you.

Uneven Party Sizes Are Okay
You don’t need equal numbers on both sides. Choose those who matter most, not just for symmetry.

Rain Happens
Unpredictable weather can be stressful, so always have a backup plan. Indoor spaces can be romantic too!

Budgets Often Exceed Expectations
Weddings are expensive, and unexpected costs arise. Set a realistic budget before booking anything to avoid financial surprises.

What’s been your biggest wedding planning surprise?

Our team recently got together for a planner workshop, and let’s just say… the stories did not disappoint! From unexpected timeline hiccups to, um, unique wedding guests (yes, there was a leprechaun), we’ve seen it ALL.

Some highlights from our round of Never Have I Ever, Planner Edition:

💃 Had a belly dancer at a wedding (always a hit!)
💡 Waved a food truck into an event space… only for it to catch a strand of bistro lights and rip down all the lighting. (It could have been a dark night in desert)
💩 Picked up beer b***o poo (because )
💥 Seen a guest throw up on the dance floor (the DJ kept playing—respect.)
📜 Had a couple forget their marriage license (whoops!)
🚨 Planned a wedding where the overhead sprinklers came on (indoor rain = not as romantic as it sounds.)
🙃 Been yelled at by a family member (hazard of the job, but we stay compassionate & professional!)

At the end of the day, no matter the chaos, we love what we do. Weddings are unpredictable, but our team is always ready to handle whatever comes way 💕.

Have a wild wedding story?

Drop it in the comments! ⬇️

“Ashley & Nick’s wedding vision was an intimate celebration at the Boulders with their closest friends & family. Their wedding ceremony was held at the beautiful Organic Garden adjacent to the spa. This was the perfect tranquil space for them to say their personal vows in front of everyone! There was not a dry eye in the garden that day. Their guests moved to Promise Rock for an outdoor dining & dancing experience with the most fun DJ! Ashley & Nick surprised their guests with freshly piped hand crafted cannolis before the night was over. This was a celebration to remember for all. I am so grateful to have been part of this wedding celebration and with Ashley & Nick a lifetime of love!” -Planner Alicia

02/27/2025

Even the most creative people can struggle to define their personal style in a way that translates artistically. But don’t worry—there are simple ways to help guide this process!

1. Look Around Your Home

Take a moment to observe your surroundings. Do you notice a pattern in colors or textures? Is your home formal or cozy? How does it make you feel when you walk in? Or better yet, how do you want it to feel?

Some common styles to consider:

Traditional (timeless, elegant, structured)
Personalized (unique, sentimental, meaningful details)
Urban Glam (chic, bold, statement-making)
Modern (sleek, minimalist, contemporary)
Organic & Natural (earthy, soft, romantic)

Write down the words and emotions that resonate with you.

2. Study Your Closet

Your wardrobe is a great reflection of your personal aesthetic. Do you lean toward classic, tailored pieces, or do you prefer soft, bohemian fabrics? Are your outfits neutral and understated, or do you love bold colors and patterns? Take note of what you naturally gravitate toward. And don’t forget your fiancé(e)’s style—your wedding should be a blend of both your personalities.

3. Think About Your Interests

What brings you joy? What do you love doing together? Your shared interests can inspire unique wedding details. Some ideas:

Cooking & Food Experiences
Outdoor Adventures
Art & Museums
Sports & Fitness
Music & Concerts
Travel & Exploration

4. Define Your Soundtrack

Music can shape the mood of your wedding in a powerful way. Who are your favorite artists? What genres do you gravitate toward? What about your fiancé(e)? Even if your tastes differ, that contrast can make for a fun and well-balanced wedding atmosphere.

5. Choose Three Words

If you had to describe your dream wedding in three words, what would they be? Some examples:

Romantic, Timeless, Intimate
Fun, Energetic, Unconventional
Minimal, Elegant, Modern

Once you’ve taken the time to reflect on these elements, planning becomes easier. A Wedding Planner can help translate your ideas into a cohesive vision with mood boards and creative direction.

“Lily and Ethan’s wedding day was absolutely beautiful! There was so much love shared among friends, family, and most importantly, the couple. The weather was perfect and sunny, making the day even more special.

The bride’s walk down the aisle with both of her parents was such a sweet moment. The ceremony was a beautiful Jewish tradition, filled with meaning. Afterward, the couple took a quiet moment to themselves while guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres and drinks outside.

Guests had fun taking Polaroid pictures for the guest book, and in a thoughtful tribute, white dove pins were available for everyone to wear in remembrance of a dear friend who had passed away.

Following a lively and fun grand entrance, the couple shared their first dance, which was very sweet. The groom then gave a heartfelt welcome speech, followed by the blessing of the bread by the Rabbi. The night ended with an epic dance party, and guests enjoyed taking photos in front of the couple’s photo wall.

It was an amazing day filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments!” -Planner Melissa

I want to take a moment to honor Melissa for completing her first year as J.Starr Wedding Company's Care Coordinator. As the company continues to grow and scale, I knew there was something essential I never wanted to lose—the deep-rooted care that defines who we are. The thoughtful, behind-the-scenes details that strengthen our connections with couples, venues, vendors, and each other as a team.

Melissa has become the glue that holds those details together, ensuring that the "small-town" warmth we’re known for remains at the heart of everything we do.

From organizing wedding paperwork with vendor teams and their Instagram handles, to gathering our team’s behind-the-scenes photos, to sharing candid moments on IG Stories and tagging all the right people—Melissa ensures our presence is both intentional and meaningful.

She also makes sure every team member submits post-event recaps, allowing us to continuously learn and improve. And beyond that, she finds time to celebrate birthdays, work anniversaries, and help coordinate our quarterly workshops.

Melissa’s care, compassion, and consistency keep the heartbeat of J.Starr Wedding Company steady. I can't thank her enough for being by my side since day ONE of this company. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come, and I can’t wait to see how much further we’ll go together.

We love you, Melissa—congratulations on your first year in this meaningful role!

The biggest realization I’ve had in the wedding industry? It’s never *just* about the wedding. It’s about the people—their relationships, their emotions, their stories.

Planning a wedding isn’t just coordinating timelines and choosing florals; it’s navigating family dynamics, easing anxieties, and creating a space where couples can truly be present in one of the most meaningful days of their lives.

At the end of the day, the details matter, but I promise you, the feelings matter so much more.
Thank you for the new headshots

“Jessica and Patrick’s wedding was an absolute dream come true. It was a celebration of love and genuine kindness that it felt like the entire was day was wrapped in a cozy, warm blanket. The smiles and laughter that filled the air were a testament to the wonderful people who came to share in their joy.

The welcoming spirit of their families truly stood out to me. From the heartfelt toasts to the tearful yet joyful hugs, their families made everyone feel like a cherished part of the journey. It was a reminder that love extends far beyond the couple themselves, reaching out to envelop all who were lucky enough to be present.

The vendor team, well, they were nothing short of magical. With their professionalism, they managed to make every moment feel effortless and fun. Jessica and Patrick’s wedding was not just a near perfect day, it was proof that having all that love and joy surrounding you is really what your wedding day is all about.” -Planner Angela
