It’s breast cancer awareness month. Go get ‘em checked. Early detection saves lives. Treat yourself to dahlias afterwards.
I had my mammogram last week and it was less than 30 minutes at WKDI, plus they’re always so friendly! Pro tip: take your tech a bouquet of flowers and you’ll be so busy talking about dahlias that you won’t ever have time for it to be awkward. 💐
Make time to take care of yourself, friend.
I want to see you enjoying all of the beautiful things still to come in your life, so make your appointment tomorrow. Ok? 🫶

It’s true.
I never loved mornings until we moved to our farm and I can watch the sun peeking over the tree-line at the river and hear all of the birdsongs.
You figure out fast in the heat and humidity of July & August that you want to get the outside work done early in the day.
You have the work that needs done, but you also have the reward of these breathtaking sunrises. This is the secret to transforming into a morning person…oh, and coffee. I learned to drink coffee since we bought the farm.
So, to become a morning person, buy a farm.

Every day is Earth Day when your life and livelihood are so intricately connected to the soil, plants, and the weather. This was our actual sunrise this morning.
I’m passionate about conservation and farmland preservation…ask my kiddos😜 Their whole lives they’ve heard me get on my soapbox about good, productive farm ground being sold off and developed. Or farms not tending to their natural resources well. Or farm families having to sell off generational farms because family members want the money from selling the land, without regard for a family member who wants to farm. You probably just shouldn’t get me started. 😄
It is our privilege to be the caretakers of this beautiful farm and we have a responsibility to protect its resources to the best of our abilities.
It will be put into an agricultural conservation easement someday, so that all it can ever be is farmland, and I hope our grandchildren sit under the shade of the hundreds of trees we’ve planted, and fish in the clear Barren River and know we thought this special place was worth all of the effort we’ve put into it.
My friends and family know that 11 months of the year I’m going hard, full throttle, all things flowers. It is definitely not a hobby for me.
My thoughts for those think they want to be a flower farmer:
1. Would you want to be just a farmer? As in forget about flowers for a minute. Are you passionate about soils, bugs, diseases, nutrient management, and plant biology & genetics? Because those are the building blocks of farming, whether it’s flowers or row crops, those are the things you’d better love and understand first. If you’re answer is no, then you may want to garden and learn flowers as a hobby. Until you’re filing a Schedule F and generating actual farm income of a significant amount, please do not call yourself a farmer.
2. Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur and run your own business? Because growing the flowers is the easy part (tongue in cheek there, because it’s not easy, folks). As our business grows, I spend less time doing the manual labor I love and more time managing all of the behind the scenes stuff (taxes, bookkeeping, ordering materials, communicating with customers, social media…) which is what is necessary to run a small business, aka a flower farm. If you’re not interested in running a small business, then you don’t want to be a flower farmer. Growing flowers is only part of the process, selling the flowers is what’s required to earn an income. And I certainly expect to earn an income in exchange for my time…again, not a hobby.
I’m thinking back to when one of our children was filling out a form, back when I was still growing vegetables and selling at the farmer’s market. The form asked my occupation and I thought the answer was clearly that I was a farmer. My child disagreed and explained to me that I wasn’t a “real” farmer. As I look back on it now, I can see that at that point I hadn’t developed all of the skills that were necessary to be a “real” farmer, and I was indeed a hobbyist. I
To each person who has wanted to buy flowers from us for Valentine’s Day, Thank You! Because we only sell flowers we’ve grown, unfortunately, we don’t have blooms for Valentine’s Day. The anemone will be blooming strong in a few weeks, but whoever chose February 14 for the biggest flower day of the year wasn’t thinking about growing seasons! 🤣
We don’t have actual flowers for your Valentine, but you could always buy one of our Bouquet Subscriptions and give 6 weeks of our locally grown blooms or our Once A Month subscription for 6 months of flowers. If you’re interested in more details, look on our website to read all about how our bouquet subscription works.
We sure do appreciate that you want to buy our locally grown flowers and hope you’ll remember us for Easter and Mother’s Day when we have thousands of stems in bloom. 💕
Small Business Saturday
We have ALL of the holiday bulbs on the truck today! Our Dutch amaryllis make the perfect hostess, teacher, Secret Santa gift!!
We’re downtown Bowling Green today until 2pm. Come shop the great small businesses on our Square.
How to Bring your Amaryllis Bulb back into Bloom
Today we’re talking about what you need to do to get your amaryllis bulb to rebloom this winter.
It’s time to bring it inside. Cut off the foliage and place it in a cool (50-65 degree), dark, dry place for 10 weeks. Without this dormant rest period, your bulb will not rebloom. 10 weeks from now is the end of January and I love having these flowers blooming inside our home during those dreary winter days of February.
In the video I walk you through cleaning your bulb up to come inside, where and how to store. You can do this! Have you brought your bulb in yet?

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” Nelson Henderson
🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳
Yesterday and today we have been busy planting trees. 🌳 Yes, you read that right; not flowers, trees. 2600 native hardwood trees on 5 acres. This is the first phase of a project we have committed to which is to improve wildlife and pollinator habitat on our farm. Phase 2 will be in March when we seed 13 acres to pollinator habitat. This project is in cooperation with NRCS and KY Fish and Wildlife. Because our farm borders the river, these trees will also help with erosion control on our steep hill slopes, and will provide habitat and food for the quail, turkey, deer and other wildlife we regularly see. Red Oak, White Oak, Black Walnut, Shagbark Hickory, and a few Dogwoods...these are trees whose shade David and I may never sit under, but we are so excited that we have completed this project and hope someday our grandchildren will enjoy sitting under these trees. Paying it forward 🌎
