I don’t do resolutions much, but every year I have a personal life New Year’s Eve ritual. Sometimes I start doing it earlier, in the days leading up to the finale, just for extra space. I sit down alone for a quiet hour or so, light a candle, open my journal, and flow out all the reflections from the previous year. Not in prose- just a list, or rather, a splat of words and notes on a page. I often decorate it with a border and colorful symbols. It started as a list of accomplishments, but over the years has also included challenges I’ve overcome (or just endured, grown from), impactful experiences both large and diminutive, highlights of the year, losses and gains experienced, things I learned. The nuggets that defined the year, including those that maybe I forgot about or didn’t give much thought.

This ritual has become so vital to me during the eerie, no-man’s-land days at the end of Yule and moving forth into the next chapter. I’ve always been a writer, with boxes of old journals in the basement filled with rambling writings, drawings, collages and memorabilia- but these days my journal has become filled with to do lists, shopping lists, random thoughts or information to remember- not so much the creative or spiritual practice that it was. This ritual is one I still come back to in the midst of life’s chaos to say hey, look, look at this… you made it here, so far, and look at all these beautiful ups and downs in the web of this year. And here’s another one.

The absolute epitome of a spring Phosphorus bouquet. Loose, tumbly, and full of all the best vernal flowers-blooming dogwood, mock orange, peonies, belle époque tulips, sweet pea tendrils and my favorite- bleeding hearts.

Jess & Beau at China Harbor ❤️ an iconic Seattle landmark that said farewell and closed its doors the following day. What an off the charts last hurrah, and a magical celebration for these two lovely humans- complete with a double rainbow post-ceremony! I don’t know if there’s a better blessing than that.

Alexa & Zach’s tablescapes- a combination of Pacific Northwest summer garden flowers (including some VERY special, delicate Shirley poppies from .flora ) and juicy tropicals to honor Alexa’s Hawaiian background, beeswax taper candles for a honeyed scent, lots of bright papaya & the pinkest, most perfect dragonfruit I’ve ever seen. 🥵
