Soccer icons Amy Griffin & Mary Harvey are transforming the game through human rights advocacy - and each with their own, unique leadership voice.

As members of the US Women’s National soccer team, they won the first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup back in 1991. Today, their leadership journeys have steered them into human rights advocacy. They’re looking to change the game of soccer by reducing risks to athletes and increasing the positive impact.

1973 brought an interesting twist to the Sports Star of the Year Awards. For the first time in history, there was a three-way tie for the Man of the Year Award. Spencer Haywood, Seattle SuperSonics player and Olympian, was one of the winners along with softball player Willard Fenton and UW football player Calvin Jones.

Haywood was a force for the Sonics, but it took quite a bit of tenacity to solidify his acceptance into the league. Signed to a contract in 1970, Haywood wasn’t four years past his high school graduation (a stipulation for the NBA at the time), and the league pushed back on allowing the contract to move forward. A lawsuit went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and Haywood vs National Basketball Association changed the eligibility rules, creating a path to the NBA for high school and collegiate ballers.

While legendary golfer Fred Couples may be a 90th Annual Sports Star of the Year Honoree, history shows that the Sports Star of the Year Award has been celebrating the sport of golf for decades!

In 1961, young golfer Anne Quast was honored as the "Man of the Year" just a few years after being the first Washingtonian to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated for her golf expertise.
