SIGMA KAPPA PARENT’S CLUB SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 MEETING MINUTES
PRESENT:
Richard White, President Karen and Mark Stair, Secretary & Newsletter Chairs
Linda and Bill Park, Treasurers Mary Rewa, Spreads Coordinator Raley Rewa, PC Liaison
Theresa Cuthill, Julie Fry, Megan Evans, Valerie Patton, Darren Sonnen, Melissa Bernovich, Dave & Norma Brengelmann, Janine & Bob Bozorth, Mike & Lisa Hagen, Marita & Mikael Ohman, and Genevieve Rucki
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 6:10 pm by Richard. WELCOME everyone. So glad to see familiar faces and new faces to SK. What is Parents Club? We want to enhance our daughter's experience while here at SK. Small things like Halloween and Valentines Treat Bags, or bigger items like quarterly Spreads during finals, and even bigger items like the office remodel, downstairs lounge and exercise room remodel, just to name a few.
TREASURERS REPORT: As of this date, there is $5262.66 in the account. This is a great buffer to supply the beginning of year items, like paying for Bid Day This is about $2500 more than at this time last year, but we have not paid for June's year end gift to the house.
OLD BUSINESS: Last June's End of year Gift.
We wanted to revitalize/improve the courtyard. There's a lot of issues with that: low sun until summer, big trees. We said we were going to clean up the area, then SK Alumni Board said they would help, but an agreement was never reached. We wanted to wait until we can get more feedback from new members and just do things on our own without Alumni board help. We would like to consider different ways to spend the funds that we raise. Should we pay for smaller items each quarter, so all the girls can get to use/enjoy the new items? More of the big expenditure items like the lounge renewal take a year or two and some of the girls graduate before they have a chance to enjoy them. Maybe Raley can put out suggestion boxes. We are not allowed to do structural changes, since it is a historical house. To change anything, we have to ask SK Corporation Board. No urgency for this decision. We will get some more ideas from new members.
QUESTION FOR THE FALL IS HOW DO WE GET MORE PARENTS INVOLVED?
Mary Rewa, Spreads Coordinator, is the only Board member to be left after this year. We need more parent involvement. Maybe Parents Club will only be able to do Spreads, no other activities like Mother-Daughter Tea, or other events. Those things can only happen with parent engagement and officers to keep things running. We also need the SK girls to encourage their parents to get involved. We need contact information, engagement, and donations from the beginning of the year.
Please consider being an officer. Advantage to do so now, is you have all of us here to mentor you throughout the year and pick our brains! Maybe have the vote in January. We can get you through the Mother-Daughter Tea and Auction, which is the biggest event of the year. Be engaged. Be involved.

We set the dates for the next few months, then Raley will check to make sure there are not conflicts with house schedules.
Fall Fundraiser: Poinsettia Sales are going on NOW! These are high quality plants from a quality nursery. There were order sheets at Bid Day, Presentation Day, and our first meeting last week. They come up with a few designs and send us pictures via email. We vote, then make them at a November meeting. Marilyn Evans will lead the design this year. Thanks, Marilyn! It's always a fun night. You do not have to be creative or crafty to make them. Come join us. Here is a link to view pictures of the last few years holiday ornaments that Parents Club made for all the ladies of SK.
SK Holiday House Decorating. Saturday, November 29th or Sunday, November 30th. 9 am until finished.
The date is not set yet. We have to find out about the Apple Cup game time and will send out date and time later.
December:
December 6-12. Finals and Spreads Week.
Spreads are the quarterly food and snacks that Mary Rewa, Spreads Coordinator, sets out the week of Finals. The cooks are not here during finals week. No formal meals. Mary buys healthy food and snacks and delivers it at the beginning of finals week. The girls set it out throughout the week, so the girls will have available treats at all times of the days and nights of studying. The girls really appreciate this sustained, weekly event every quarter. If anyone is interested in helping Mary with this just let her know at [email protected]. It is a big job. The girls love home-made treats, too. Parents have dropped off cookies, salads, and soups. Make whatever you can, for 30 to 150. It is all appreciated.
Holiday Break: December 13, 2014-January 4, 2015.
Holiday House Take Down: January 3rd, 2015, 9 am until finished. All decorations must be taken down before Jan 4th when the ladies of SK return.
January 2015:
Wednesday, January 14th, 6:30 pm, Parents Club Meeting. Two weeks before the Mother-Daughter Tea to finalize all preparations.
Sunday, January 25th, 1-3 pm. The MOTHER-DAUGHTER TEA. Set up is at 9 am.
This is the biggest event of the year. A fantastic day for the ladies of SK and the significant female figures in their lives: moms, sisters, grandmothers, aunties. We have to limit the number each person can bring so as not to be overly crowded in the dining room. The ladies can proudly introduce SK house and friends to their family. People dress up a bit and enjoy tea, coffee, punch and a variety of finger foods. People donate food items. There is also an auction, which is the biggest fundraiser of the year. Items are donated such as gift baskets, event tickets, home made items, all kinds of wonderfully creative ideas. More details to follow.
February 2015:
Wednesday, February 11th, 6:30 pm, Parents Club Meeting and making Valentine's Treat Bags.
March 2015:
Father-Daughter Event maybe a Husky Basketball game. either Thursday, March 5th or Saturday, March 7th at 1:30 pm. Saturday may be better so out of town Dads can make it. More details later.
As we move forward in the next meetings, we fill in on any items that we left open. Please join us for meetings and events so your ideas can be heard. We urge you and your daughters to let all of the SK families know how important it is to join Parents Club and to stay connected to the lives of your daughters and their new friends and families.
Thank you for your time and here's to a great year at UW and SK!
Sincerely,
SK Parents Club
