Miss Mo' aka Morgan Ann Gilkeson, teaching drums to the youngsters at since 2020!

Q: My essential tools for teaching music are:
A: “Watching a struggling student's eyes light up when they instantly connected to rhythm through my color-coded method showed me how every child carries an innate sense of groove – they just need the right key to unlock it.”

Q: How has a student inspired you?
A: “My color-coded teaching method is my most powerful tool, as it creates an instant bridge between visual and rhythmic learning, connecting students to that primal pulse they first experienced with their mother's heartbeat in the womb.”

ABOUT:
Morgan Gilkeson, affectionately known as Miss Mo', is a dedicated and enthusiastic drum kit teacher at The Seattle Drum School in Lake City. With a deep love for music and a passion for nurturing young talents, Miss Mo' has become a beloved figure in the local music education community.

Miss Mo's journey in music began at a young age when she discovered her love for percussion instruments. Growing up in a musical household, the rhythmic beats of the drum kit captivated her, becoming an integral part of her life.

Driven by her passion, Miss Mo' pursued a Bachelor's degree in Music Education, specializing in percussion, from Central Washington University. Under the guidance of esteemed percussionists, she honed her skills and explored different styles and techniques.

Miss Mo' firmly believes in creating a supportive and positive learning environment, tailored to each student's unique needs and interests. With several years of experience teaching children of all ages and skill levels, she has developed a nurturing and challenging teaching style.

Known for her innovative color-coded teaching methods, Miss Mo' makes learning the drums exciting and accessible for young musicians. She incorporates interactive games, rhythm exercises, and popular songs to keep her students engaged and motivated.

Beyond teaching drumming skills, Miss Mo' strives to instill important life lessons such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Her positive impact on students' lives is evident as many have pursued successful musical careers or developed a lifelong love for music.

In addition to her role as a drum kit teacher, Miss Mo' actively participates in community events and workshops, promoting the importance of music education for children. She founded Mo' Jam Presents, a weekly improv groove jam session, and now organizes a youth Mo' Jam at 2nd Sundays at 3: Youth Music Community!, encouraging young musicians to collaborate and share their love for rhythm.

Miss Mo’ has toured in NYC, California, Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland playing the drums with Mountlake Terrace High School and CWU Jazz Ensembles. She created Mo’ Jam Mondays, an amazing improv groove jam where she puts bands of strangers together and they groove to make up a Mo’ Jam is Yo Jam original song on the spot. A stage where for 320 Mondays until Covid-19 our heartbeats connected. Miss Mo’ is a professional jazz drummer and has been playing drums for 20 years. She is now taking students 2+ to young adult.

ABOUT
As drummers, we enhance the music through emotion and a careful understanding of timing. Drumming is a sensory experience; the drums are incredibly visual instruments and can be learned simply by watching and listening. There are many interpretations of the long-standing tradition of drum kit technique. I focus on imparting concepts with multifunctional applications, balancing classical methods with naturally intuitive movements while emphasizing music reading, listening, and breathing.

I have had the privilege of studying with remarkable instructors, including Joe Morello, Pat Petrillo, Frank Ottis, David Garibaldi, and El Negro Hernandez. With 35 years of professional drumming experience, I have performed across the US, Europe, and Asia. I have taught music for 20 years at all levels, covering drum kit, introductory piano, and guitar. Additionally, I have been an instructor in digital music recording and have taught audio recording at John F. Kennedy University.

My performance credits include many large music festivals like Coachella, Outside Lands, and High Sierra. I have shared the stage with various musical luminaries, including Paul Schaefer, Bernie Worrell, Jerry Harrison, Mike Watt, Jane Wiedlin, Jorge Santana, and Zigaboo Modeliste. I have toured extensively with the Delvon Lamer Organ Trio, electronic groups Pacific Horizon and Screens, the Eric McFadden Trio, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, alongside blues artist Sonny Rhodes, and with Southern soul group Lord Loves A Working Man. Locally, I've performed with Aqualizer, members of McTuff, and The True Loves.

I have also toured with acts supporting Blackalicious, Les Claypool, Del the Funky Homosapien, String Cheese Incident, Galactic, Ani Difranco, Gotye, and Phantogram.
