Langston Seattle presents "FOR OUR CHILDREN," a film that unites maternal voices of resilience and solidarity in a poignant cinematic journey. Directed, produced and co-written by Débora Souza Silva, this emotional documentary chronicles the powerful convergence of two mothers, Reverend Wanda Johnson and Angela Williams, whose lives were forever altered by the scourge of police brutality against young Black men.

Seattle-based educator, artist, and activist, Logic Amen, hosted The Griot Party Experience on January 13 here. The event was made possible by a special collaboration between Amen and the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Moving performances and powerful storytelling rooted in the Griot tradition were the main attractions. And although it was one of the coldest nights in Seattle’s recorded history, more than 200 people braved the frigid temperatures to attend the event:

What is the Doors Open Levy and why does it matter? Good question! Doors Open is an arts and culture levy literally decades in the making. The levy, funded by a 0.1% sales tax, will provide nearly $800 million (you read that right) in funding through spring of 2031. This influx of financial support holds immense promise for King County’s well-being, economic growth, and most importantly, all of us living and working here. (Artists and arts organizations, we’re especially looking at you. 💕 ) The levy was unanimously passed by the King County Council on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

We strongly believe that arts and culture–and the people who create art and embody culture–are an essential part of creating a new, livable, beautiful city. Thank you for all of your work, and we look forward to supporting you.

This is an important step towards equity, economic development, and expanding access to more corners of King County. Let’s go!!!

Children need good nutrition all year long. When school is out during the summer, many children no longer have access to even one nutritious meal each day. Summer Meal Programs are here to help to fill the gap: https://freesummermeals.org/

Research shows a lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins. We must do all we can to stop this cycle so that children are ready to learn during the school year. United Way of King County

Celebrating its 20th annual festival, the Seattle Black Film Festival (SBFF) returns to Seattle for another year of Black Brilliance in film!

After a pandemic, a name change, and a virtual festival, SBFF returns to bring local, national, and international films to the area, April 22-30. SBFF is a program of Langston Seattle and is held at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute (LHPAI), which recently celebrated our 50th year as a Black cultural hub in the historic Central District.

SBFF (formerly known as the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival) will be a hybrid film festival held virtually and in person over nine days at LHPAI. The festival will present screenings, workshops, and features Opening Night, Centerpiece, and Closing Night special events.

Opening the festival, on Saturday, April 22nd, will be a preview of Rick DuPree’s upcoming documentary of the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party, "Seattle Black Panthers". Along with the director, we will host several esteemed members of the Party to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the chapter’s history.

On Thursday, April 27th, Seattle artist Tariqa Waters (of Martyr Sauce) will host a screening of her film "THANK YOU MS. PAM", along with live performances.

The closing night screening of "What the Funk: A Love Letter to the POC Community", a documentary about the Pacific Northwest’s first all-POC burlesque festival, will culminate in a burlesque show by Mx. Pux A Plenty on Sunday, April 30th.
