Tomorrow (November 30) is your last chance to see STATE OF EMERGENCY, James Gregory Atkinson's one-channel video installation in our gallery space at Chophouse Row! Stop by from 5-9pm - just remember to bring your mask and proof of vaccination. ⠀ ⠀ The film at the middle of the exhibition, "Jail Bird in a Peacock Chair," centers the history of the iconic Peacock Chair to interrogate contemporary social contexts, historical concepts of identity, and to explore ideas of Black masculinities and resistance through its origins in forced prison labor in the Philippines, status as an internationally traded “exotic” commodity, and use in portrait photography and associations with Black radical activists such as Huey P. Located in Capitol Hill’s iconic Chophouse Row building, the Goethe Pop Up Seattle is a temporary branch of the Goethe-Institut, the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. Throughout 2020, we will be hosting and supporting an international program of exhibitions, films, lectures, performances, public discussions, and more.

Our goal is to present German culture in Seattle and help shape a current understanding of Germany today. Our program offers an opportunity to engage with themes and questions relevant to contemporary German culture and society. We organize a broad range of events and support projects in the fields of film and new media, arts, theater and dance, music, literature, architecture, and more. The events take place in our space and at partner venues around Seattle. We collaborate with local artists, organizations, universities, and schools with an interest in Germany and its language and culture.
