Continuing where we left off, the Primula Denticulata Primrose!

This one is super pretty. It grows rounded flower heads with several flat flowers in shades of purple, blue, lilac, white or pink that have golden eyes in the center.

Primroses do love that partial shade and can be grown in patios, flower beds, and containers.

Going over what to look for when handling the Primrose Flowers

Slugs and snails are common pests affecting primrose plants and can be controlled with non-toxic slug bait placed around the garden.

Spider mites and aphids may also attack primroses but can be sprayed with soapy water. If primrose plants are not getting enough drainage, they may also be prone to crown rot and root rot.

You can be easily fixed by amending the soil with compost or relocating the plants to a well-drained site. Too much moisture can also make the primrose flower susceptible to fungal infections.

To prevent this, use good watering habits and adequate spacing between plants. Growing primroses is easy when given the proper growing conditions and following primrose care guidelines.

Primula Vialii

This is one we are looking at today and this one is so beautiful!! Also known as the Orchid Primrose, this plant grows unique spires of tiny pinkish-purple flowers.

The flowers are likely to last throughout the summer and add a special effect to your garden or patio when grown in groups.

The Orchid Primrose is short-lived but it will self-seed when the growing conditions are satisfactory.

Today we are going over caring for the Primrose.

They should be planted in lightly shaded areas with well-drained soil, preferably amended with organic matter.

Place them about 6 to 12 inches (15-30 cm.) apart and 4 to 6 inches (10-15 cm.) deep. Water thoroughly after planting.

Be sure to include a layer of mulch around the plants to help retain moisture. Continue to give your primroses thorough watering throughout the summer months, about once a week or more during periods of drought, but decrease this once fall approaches.

Light applications of organic fertilizer throughout the growing season can be helpful as well. Pruning of dead leaves and spent blooms will help them looking their best.

If you want to collect the seeds of your primroses, wait until late summer or early fall before taking them. Store them in a cool, dry place until the following planting season or sow them in a cold frame.

The third type we are going over today is Primula Belarina Cobalt Blue.

The rich-blue double flowers of the will bloom throughout spring. They’re best grown in containers or at the front of borders due to their unusual color.

The blue flower loves the sun but can tolerate partial shade. It will also need some attention as it can easily get infected with aphids, slugs, leaf and bud eelworms, and leaf-minting flies.

In case your wondering how to grow these plants, we have you covered.

Growing them is relatively easy, as these plants are quite hardy and adaptable. You can find them at most garden centers and nurseries.

Make sure to look for primroses that are healthy in appearance, preferably with unopened buds.

They can be grown from seeds with an equal mixture of soil, sand and peat moss and can be done indoors or out depending on the time of year and the climate in your area.

Generally, seeds are sown indoors (outdoors in cold frame) during winter. Once seedlings have obtained their second or third leaves, they can be transplanted into the garden. Cuttings can also be taken from some varieties during summer.

The first type we are going to go over today is Oenothera Speciosa.

The bowl-shaped satiny white flowers are fragrant and age to show pink veins. They will open in the evening and stay open till late in the morning. The oil of the Evening Primrose even has therapeutic benefits.

If you have alkaline soil, then growing the Evening Primrose might work for you because this plant is very tolerant of less than perfect soil conditions. It’s grown as a ground cover and attracts birds.

Yesterday we went over how to plant them and when they bloom. Today we are going over how to care for them:

How do I care for Peony's once they are planted and bloomed?

Peonies take time to develop. They usually need a few years to establish themselves, bloom, and grow.

They thrive on benign neglect. Unlike most perennials, they don’t need to be dug and divided every few years.

- Spare the fertilizer. Work the soil well before you plant, mixing in compost and a little fertilizer, and that should be enough.

- If your soil is poor, the time to apply fertilizer (bonemeal, compost, or well-rotted manure) is early summer, after the peonies have bloomed and you have deadheaded the flowers. Don’t fertilize more than every few years.

- Help the stems. If peonies have any structural weakness, it is their stems, which are sometimes not strong enough to support their gigantic blossoms. Consider three-legged metal peony rings or wire tomato cages that allow the plant to grow through the center of the support.

- Deadhead peony blossoms as soon as they begin to fade, cutting to a strong leaf so that the stem doesn’t stick out of the foliage. Cut the foliage to the ground in the fall to avoid any overwintering diseases.

- Don’t smother peonies with mulch. Where cold temperatures are severe, for the first winter after planting you can mulch VERY loosely with pine needles or shredded bark. Remove mulch in the spring.

Wanted to give you guys some more information for planting these beautiful flowers.

How do I plant them?
- Space them 3 to 4 feet apart to allow for good air circulation between the plants. Stagnant, humid air can be a recipe for disease to develop.

- Dig a generous-sized hole, about 2 feet deep and 2 feet across in well-drained soil in a sunny spot.

-The soil will benefit from the addition of organic material in the planting hole.

- Set the root so the eyes face upward on top of a mound of soil in the hole, placing the roots just 2 inches below the soil surface. Don’t plant too deep!

- Then, backfill the hole, taking care that the soil doesn’t settle and bury the root deeper than 2 inches. Tamp the soil gently.
When planting a container-grown peony, cover it no deeper than it grew in the pot.
Water thoroughly at the time of planting.

This week we have been talking about Peony's. Today we wanted to give you some information on them:

When do they bloom?
Typically from late spring through early summer and different varieties bloom at different seasons. Most often harder to come by after June for most areas.

When do I plant them?
Typically in the fall: in late September and October in most of the U.S. They should be settled into place about six weeks before the ground freezes.

Now this one is a unique Peony. It is called the Itoh Peony. Some fun facts on this:

- Hybrid plants that blend the perennial habit of herbaceous peonies with the sturdiness, giant flowers, and color range of tree peonies
- Herbaceous in nature, dying back to the ground when winter comes
- Attractive foliage through summer and into fall
- Good at the front of the border because they are shorter than tree and herbaceous peonies
- Showy and don’t need staking

Okay, so we know you love the Dahlias so much your ready to go out and get a bunch from your local florist. The true question is, when are they available during the year?

Dahlias are typically in season May - October during the year.

When it comes to caring for them, it does typically vary from florist to florist and depends on the event and what they are being used for.

We personally love using these in arrangements and feel they add a bit of elegance to an event.
