Tamarack Hill Farm

On any given day, at any training center, if someone was sitting and watching all day, with any sort of luck, they would be bored, bored, bored by the total absence of drama.

They would see lots of walking. They would see walk-halt-walk transitions. They would see trotting on big circles, trotting on smaller circles, transitions between gaits and within the gaits,

Hopefully, they would not see yanking or hitting or kicking, or hear loud yelling or swearing or screaming. They would not see tight nose bands, or draw reins or horses frantically tearing about being chased in circles on lunge lines.

A training center SHOULD be boring, in the sense that on no given day can a great deal ever be accomplished. Training is incremental, not dramatic.

When I see those demos at the big equine festivals, where some miracle worker is working some transformation before some cheering crowd, the cynic in me always thinks that the person has to create resistance to have sufficient drama to hold the crowd, because normal training works so diligently to avoid as much drama as possible.
