Sad day at Tecumseh Theater 😔

A couple weeks back the crew Lepi Enterprises, Inc. had our original 1907 theater curtain tested for asbestos. The results were not what we expected.

Test results came back with the curtain being over 60% asbestos. Soon we'll have an abatement crew remove the curtain and make the space safe for use by the construction crew and visitors. Unfortunately, setbacks are the reality when restoring a 100+ year building.

Pictured here is how the curtain looks today, how it looked in 1976, and a depiction of the artwork on the center of the curtain which was discovered by Skipp Ricketts.

Our behind the scenes team was recently able to take a tour of the construction site at the elevator tower and the theater.

The scaffolding has come down from the second floor and we can really get a sense of how things are shaping out. The elevator tower is coming along nicely as Lepi Enterprises, Inc. preps to get the windows in.

Did you know that Tecumseh Theater was going to be demolished back in the 1970s because the structure contained valuable steel I beams?

Pictured here are the very same beams that the building was going to be demolished for.

Thanks to the vision of our board members, a section of a steel I beam that runs across the 2nd floor will be left exposed to show the history of the building and the region.

Anyone recognize these crazy kids?

Back in 1976, Shawnee local Skip Ricketts (pictured bottom left on the Polaroid) and friends managed to scrape together enough money to purchase Tecumseh Theater and save it from demolition.

That same group can still be found supporting Tecumseh Theater. If anyone has memories over years, we'd love to read them in the comments!
