We’re excited to invite you to a very special evening celebrating the legacy of Earl Scruggs with the Del McCoury Band, Rob Ickes, and Trey Hensley at the Remembering Earl concert!

Due to an unforeseen issue with the facilities at Malcom Brown Auditorium, the concert will now be held at the brand-new Crest High School Auditorium, located just 10 minutes from the original venue.

Starting an all-new season of Coffee with the Curator, join Earl Scruggs Center Assistant Director Zach Dressel and Dean of the Dover Library at Gardner Webb University Dr. Natalie Bishop as they unveil plans for an all-new local history project.

On December 22, 2022, a group of volunteers overseen by Earl Scruggs Center staff in collaboration with Cleveland County administration rehomed hundreds of photographs, documents, and historical objects located in the Shelby Star building that was slated for demolition. After moving the objects to the Cleveland County Historical Collection’s storage facility, a complete set of microfilm covering issues of the Shelby Star from 1902 to 2019 prompting Dressel and Bishop to begin plans for digitizing the microfilm and making it publicly accessible through digitalnc.org, North Carolina’s largest digital repository. Just over two years later Gardner Webb University has purchased the necessary equipment with grant funds and the multi-phase project is beginning in earnest. For this presentation Dressel and Bishop will outline this exciting new opportunity and demonstrate the equipment that will make a dream of the past a reality of the future.

The Earl Experience Banjo Camp is a one-of-a-kind camp with world renowned, expert level instructors and a chance to experience the legacy of Earl Scruggs. Held at the Earl Scruggs Center, campers will receive Scruggs-style instruction in the Center’s Great Hall, participate in discussions about the life and career of Mr. Scruggs, and a get a behind-the-scenes look at the work of the Center.

Campers will also receive a camp t-shirt, camp binder, and credentials. Other perks include an Earl Scruggs Center membership and discounts in various Uptown Shelby restaurants and shops.

A light breakfast will be provided to campers on Friday and Saturday, as well as snacks and coffee during the day.

The Earl Scruggs Center is thrilled to present the Remembering Earl concert on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Malcolm Brown Auditorium, Shelby High School. This special event celebrates the legacy of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs, whose music was shaped by the cultural traditions of his hometown.

Headlining the evening is the legendary Del McCoury Band, with the talented Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley as the supporting act. Del, a Grammy winner and International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame inductee, was deeply influenced by Earl Scruggs, making this night even more special. Rob and Trey, known for their virtuosity and dynamic stage presence, will bring a fresh energy to the concert.

The Earl Scruggs Center is kicking off the 2025 Coffee with the Curator season with an exciting program at the Spangler Library in Lawndale, NC on January 30th. Join Earl Scruggs Center Assistant Director Zach Dressel and special presenter Theresa Lowe for an exploration of the interesting history behind the legendary Piedmont School that operated in Lawndale for nearly 100 years beginning in the late 19th century. Lowe will be offering a presentation that will guide the audience through Piedmont’s amazing story from a small Sunday School to a full boarding school before finally becoming part of the public school system until its closure in 1976. Dressel will present artifacts from the Cleveland County Historical Collection that are connected with the school’s past. The program will be given at the Spangler Library that was first built in 1910 as a library for the Piedmont School. The program will begin at 10am and coffee will be served.
