Sheridan College ceramics students as well as other community members recently fired some of their work over at the State Clay wood-fired kiln located on our campus. Our students took part in loading and unloading of the kiln as well as some of them participated in the multi-day firing process. Wood-fired kilns create unique results based on the flow of the ash and heat through and around the pots, and the students were excited with the results. We overheard several of them commenting on how they were going to make extra work just for the next firing of this kiln. Community partnerships like this is one of the cornerstones of our arts education at Sheridan College.

Our Story

Whitney Center for the Arts is home to live performances, art exhibitions and Sheridan College music and art departments. As one of the most advanced arts education centers in the west, it features programs in music, music technology, painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking and digital media. The WCA opened in 2016, providing students and arts patrons across the Northern Rockies with a state-of-the-art space for fine and performing arts programs, and shows and performances by artists from around the world. The 54,000 square-foot facility features a 422-seat concert hall, the largest in the region, including a changeable proscenium stage, motorized fly system and hydraulically convertible orchestra pit. Two gallery spaces showcase work by students, faculty and traveling shows throughout the year.
