We had a +7 hour drive from our hotel in France to our hotel room in Switzerland. With nothing much better to do, students could volunteer to do interviews while sitting in the best seat on the bus. There are some clips from Allie's interview in this video if you have the audio on. 😀

SO MUCH GOLD.

The Palace of Versailles, a grand testament to the opulence of the French monarchy, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located just outside of Paris. Constructed in the 17th century by Louis XIV, the Sun King, the palace boasts awe-inspiring architecture, meticulously landscaped gardens, and ornate interiors that showcase the pinnacle of French Baroque art and design. The Hall of Mirrors, a glittering gallery adorned with 357 mirrors, stands as a highlight, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, ending World War I. The sprawling estate also includes the Trianon Palaces and the picturesque Grand Canal, offering visitors a glimpse into the extravagant lifestyle of the French royalty.

Thursday, July 17th (Part 2)

The Montparnasse Tower’s observation deck offers stunning 360° views of Paris from 200 meters up, including the Eiffel Tower and other iconic landmarks. A high-speed elevator whisks you to the top in 38 seconds, where you’ll find a rooftop terrace and interactive exhibits. Ironically, it’s the best view of Paris because it’s the only one without the Montparnasse Tower in it.

Our bus driver drove us around the round-about that surrounds the Arc de Triomphe. It is about 4 lanes deep, but there are no marked lanes and it is a free for all. This round-about is the meeting point of 12 roads.

The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.
