Back to our regularly scheduled program 😆

The past two weeks have been truly wild around here. I find it somewhat difficult to get back into a routine after being away for away for a few days. I officially ended my breast-feeding journey, our daughter is five weeks away from turning one, it’s planting season, etc.

Life has been amazing. Hard and challenging but I couldn’t ask for better. I’m still trying to figure out how to make time for myself, like working out and even just being able to wash my hair.

Our daughter has really challenged me to slow down. I’m always very on the go and feeling like I should always have a project or be ‘busy’ in some way or another and she has changed all of that completely for me.

Life is beautiful 🤍

Idk how I keep getting these couples, these little angels sent from above, but I am BLESSED. Ok. So, these two are perfect. So easy to work with and soooo cuuute. Anyway, they took me to the Quad Cities Botanical Garden and we just went with it. Also A+++++ to Kirsten for the kindest feedback on their engagement album. I think it all went to my head 🥲🥰

Howdy, I’m Val 👋🏼

this may not seem like a big deal to you, but we’re pretty close to 700 followers on IG for our business (which means so much to me) and I thought now would be a good time to say hello! So, here are some fun facts about me and our business.

1. I was born in Colorado. My family moved to Florida when I was very young and we only lived there for a short time before we moved to Iowa. I’ve pretty well spent my entire life here.

2. I’m 28 years old. I’m married to my best friend and we have a beautiful daughter. Our personals are and .weber_

3. Foxtail Films is officially 3 years old!

4. we have two labrador retrievers. Onni is black and Stella is chocolate. They are best friends and polar opposites.

5. Kevin and I love to get our hands into everything. DIY, photography, farming, homesteading, fitness. We’ve done it all and we’re definitely not pros but these ‘hobbies’ make us feel complete.

6. When we started Foxtail Films, we were only offering videography. It wasn’t until I did a couples session for my sister and shared it online that we started offering photography. It blew up and I knew I was in love with it.

7. My favorite coffee is a brown sugar shaken espresso but only if it’s made by myself or my local coffee shop. Starbucks’ version is the worst thing I’ve ever had and that is facts 🤷‍♀️

8. My favorite shoe to wear as a vendor on a wedding day is a Birkenstock. Well, actually, the knock off kind from Amazon is more my style because I can be rough on them and not worry about wrecking them because they’re only like $30. They are seriously comfortable, can be dressed up or down, and look good on everyone. Unfortunately the biggest downside is that they create some serious callouses and dryness. (Ya can’t win)

9. My natural hair color is brown but I love being blonde. It’s high maintenance and some days it drives me nuts but I love it!

10. I have met so many amazing people in this industry. Rarely have I talked or worked with someone that I left going ‘yikes’. Wedding vendors are just good people. Everyone wants to see each other grow and succeed and it is truly so special to be apart of.

Documenting vs. posing

I’ve definitely been finding myself taking more in-the-moment photos and less “posed but candid photos” but I have to say that there should be a good balance.

Obviously, not every couple that we get to work with is comfortable in front of a camera let alone with their own bodies. So, sure. They might need a little prompting here and there.

Lately, I’ve been finding that I love my work a lot more when I’m a little more quiet and just let couples adventure together during their engagement session.

Come wedding time, they feel like pros, and all you have to say is , “remember what I said last time?” and it just seems to click.

One year ago I was deathly afraid of shooting in full sun.

*GASP harsh lighting*

Until I met and she changed my entire mindset.

I had the honor of second shooting a wedding for the very first time (& it was for 😱)

This couple was stunning. Inside and out. Quite possibly one of the most polite couples I’ve ever had a pleasure of spending an entire day with.

So thanks to Sydney, I bring you some photos that have quite literally made my own jaw drop (& yes I’m tootin’ my own horn)
