National Dyslexia Awareness Day is October 8th.
Each year, I like to share how I cope as a Dyslexic. I deeply struggled
with learning most of my life. I was diagnosed my sophomore year of college and was so incredibly relived to have a diagnosis. Turns out, I wasn’t “dumb” or I “just didn’t get it”. When my daughter was diagnosed, I carried much guilt, that I “gave” this to her.
Then together we started focusing on how to learn differently. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Visual learning mixed with an explanation is the BEST for us. Reading long paragraphs out loud in class is basically pure torture. Please be patient with us. We need to ask several questions as we learn. Which is something we dread, because we don’t want to fail infront of anyone. Dyslexics are empathic, they are capable of big picture thinking, excellent at problem solving, and are able to adapt to new situations.
Yeah, that is something my girl & I can live with.
