After returning to Santa Fe after the NMMEA conference, the Field Experience Immersion in Music students explored more of Santa Fe, including the Cross of the Martyrs & Historic Fort Marcy, Loretto Chapel Museum, and Meow Wolf. The students are preparing for their field experiences in the Santa Fe Public Schools this week!

The Field Experience Immersion in Music students spent the past few days in Albuquerque for the New Mexico Music Educators Association conference. They had a great time attending sessions, concerts, and networking events.

On Tuesday, the students in the Field Experience Immersion in Music class, led by Dr. Melago and Dr. Helmick, observed classes in the Santa Fe Public Schools, toured and observed at the New Mexico School for the Arts, and enjoyed the wisdom from our wonderful evening guest speaker, Deb Minyard.

On Wednesday, they attended an inspirational opening assembly at the Santa Fe Indian School, toured the school, and co-taught a lesson for the SFIS band students before driving down to Albuquerque and visiting the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. For the next few days, they will be attending the New Mexico Music Educators Association conference in Albuquerque. Go, Rock!

Audition/application materials for the Honors Flute Ensemble happening on February 22 and 23, 2025 are due on Saturday, January 11th!

The Field Experience Immersion in Music class, led by Dr. Melago and Dr. Helmick, had a great first few days in Santa Fe exploring cultural and historic sites. We arrived on Saturday evening and did a walking tour of Santa Fe on Sunday. On Monday, we traveled to Taos, where we had a special opportunity to have a tour and observe the Buffalo Dances at the Taos Pueblo (pictures were not permitted at the Pueblo due to the feast day). Tomorrow, we begin field experience in the schools.

Middle school and high school music teachers: Have you signed up to share Crescendo with your students yet? SRU music education grad Austin Wolford's session is one of the many awesome Crescendo sessions!

Right NOW is the perfect time to get your class signed up for the Crescendo Student Conference. We're just over one month away!

In one of the Crescendo sessions, students will get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to run a successful musical theatre program at the High School level. We will discuss planning and preparation for stage direction, music direction, and technical design as it pertains to High School musical theatre. Attendees will be able to follow the timeline of producing a full length musical from picking a show to auditions to closing night and beyond. A brief Q&A will take place at the end of the session.

Eight music education majors are starting their winter break with a trip to The Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago with Dr. Melago and Dr. Helmick. Today, they traveled to Chicago and enjoyed sight-seeing and the annual Giordano's pizza dinner with the group from the University of Tennessee-Martin. Over the next several days, they will attend concerts, sessions, exhibits, and networking events centered around band and orchestra. Go, Rock!

The ensemble will be performing a variety of classic holiday tunes, carols and the like-- featuring some of our own SRU students as vocalists and the Chair of our Department, Dr. Christopher Scott!
