For the August installment of "The Lifeblood of our Longevity" - a series marking our thirty years in business by highlighting key staff members - we feature John Prater, who has been on our team since 2019.

John was born in Detroit, Michigan but fortunately for us and those who patronize our bar found his way to Smithville and later to Evins Mill, where he serves as our PM front-house manager and occasionally as a bartender and a chef-de-camp. John is the proud father of two children and takes the lead in their home school education. His hobbies include hiking, gardening and cooking. He also enjoys making drinks, creating some new ones and meeting new people along the way.

2000-2008 > If Evins Mill was initially used as a corporate retreat, in 2000 it began hosting individual couples and special events, initiating a period of growth and substantial upgrades to its physical plant, including the addition of Cortland Hall, Manning Overlook, Taylor Hall, Ivy Overlook & a full service bar at the Main Lodge. More importantly, core members of its present-day staff joined Evins Mill at this time, including Tina Clark (2000), Jason Evans (2002), Darla Guess (2002), and Dorothy Knipfer (2006). With a more seasoned staff - and in the persons of Jason Evans & Tina Clark - steadier hands at the helm & in the kitchen, Evins Mill enhanced its level of service so that its cuisine & staff, along with the property's beauty, became leading attractions in and of themselves.

1995 to 1999 > There's no sugar coating it - the first few years of Evins Mill were marked by low occupancy, an underdeveloped physical plant, a revolving staff roster - and not surprisingly given these headwinds - bleak bottom lines, allowing ample room for improvement and growth in the years to come!

The story of Evins Mill as a business starts with Bill & Anita Cochran, who acquired the property in 1990 to use as a private retreat for their family and Bill's business. They simply called it "The Mill." If Bill used the facility for business, Bill's son William routinely welcomed his friends at The Mill for many a revelrous night - and in the process developed a deep affection for the property.

Depending on the season, guests may have the pleasure of encountering a variety of fauna at Evins Mill, including frogs, crawdads, turtles, owls, ducks, butterflies and more. Until yesterday however, it's fortunately been years since someone spotted an armadillo. Not to be touched, they have a certain prehistoric appeal.
