Aspen to Crested Butte via East Maroon Pass - not nearly as trafficked as West Maroon (actually we didn’t see anyone on the entire trail except a few guys on horses) and equally as pretty! We just ended up in a bit of cow traffic jam on the Crested Butte side 😆

15 years ago I moved away from Belgrade and started a new life in Chicago.

Moving to a different continent and having to speak a different language was as much of an adventure then as summiting a mountain is today.

15 years down the road, I’m happy that I eventually found myself in the mountains. Growing up in the city I didn’t know it, but I do now, that in the mountains is where I belong.

But that only leaves me with more appreciation for the place that I come from. Growing up in Serbia has taught me so many things that give me a different perspective about life. 15 years later, I am as proud as I ever was to be a Serbian, from Belgrade, that created a life in Aspen, Colorado.

Last week @erica.leafe and I accomplished a goal we’ve had for quite some years to run the 4 Pass Loop! This trail goes over 4 mountain passes in 27 miles and just over 8,100 feet of elevation gain. This was only my second time ever running the marathon distance! The trail is scenic from start to finish and the wildflowers were very distracting 😂 we finished in just over 9 hours! The impact of humans on the environment is immense and consequential, artificial intelligence is now a part of our daily reality, and innovation and creativity continue to offer endless opportunities. Artists, true to their nature, never remain passive; they continuously seek to grasp the essence of lived experiences, traverse physical and internal landscapes, unite disparate elements, draw from the past, reside in the present, question conventions, pioneer innovation, create, and envision a brighter future.

This film has been 6 years in the making, and my favorite part of it has been becoming close friends with Steve over the years. I wanted to share a bit more about my photographs that are currently exhibited at the Red Brick center for the Arts. All the remaining pieces at the gallery are now 20% off until the show goes down on February 23rd! Disturbance is a photography project that I started working on three years ago, in the middle of a summer that was defined by pandemic lockdowns, wildfires, and smoke filled skies. As the air quality was so bad that we couldn’t go about our daily activities, I started experiencing these weird feelings of depression. And the more I read about it I realized there are all these new terms that describe these feelings that are attributed to the changing environment, such as eco-anxiety and solastalgia. So in order to fight these feelings, I wanted to do something with my photography to convey these issues our valley is facing. If you follow me here on Instagram, you know that my photographs tend to be very colorful, showing sunsets, wildflowers, skiers; so presenting this project in black and white was a way for me to tell a different and more meaningful story. The different technical approaches in this project were my exploration of expressing grief about the changing environment. I kept the photographs of the destruction by wildfires in color, as they remind of those pretty photographs of nature that I usually take, but once you look closer you realize they are all photographs of burned forests. My goal with this project was to raise awareness, but also show beauty of this place I’ve been fortunate to call home for the past decade. Studies have shown that people feel apathy towards photographs of environmental destruction, in a way that those scenes make them feel like the fight for climate has already been lost. So instead of showing only destruction by wildfires, I also focus on the landscapes that haven’t been lost yet, but we are at stake to lose if we don’t take action.
