Flying into the next: Vanessa Carrillo in
The Snow Maiden One Last Time

As a child growing up in Sonoma, Vanessa Carrillo was always drawn to several artistic programs offered to her community, but the one closest to her heart was — and is — Ballet Folklórico. Under the direction of Victor Ferrer (Grupo Folklórico Quetzalén), she learned the stylized dances within the four walls of an elementary school where she discovered her love for the art form. Seeking to further expand her knowledge, she also sought out training in various dance disciplines and with other mast teachers, including Martin Romero of Ballet Folklórico Mexico Danza and classical ballet here at Sonoma Conservatory of Dance under the tutelage of Executive and Artistic Director Patty O’Reilly.

One of the things that Vanessa loves about dance — and about ballet specifically — is that “we are forced to rely on ourselves, and that has helped me become more confident and sure of myself in the best possible way. I’ve learned to trust myself and my body, especially on performance days. And outside of the studio, I feel I’ve become more patient with myself and with other people. I think that energy comes from ballet.”

Vanessa shared these thoughts as she heads into her debut as the Firebird in her last year of The Snow Maiden — at least for a little while:

"As this is my last year in The Snow Maiden, it takes me back to how it was the very first ballet I performed with Sonoma Conservatory of Dance. I was still very new to ballet and had started to take classes in order to strengthen my folklórico technique. Being a part of The Snow Maiden taught me that I could express myself and my emotions without speaking, something that I had never done before. It also taught me how my folklórico techniques applied to ballet, and I then began, slowly but surely, to grow in understanding.

I will always thank SCD for allowing me a safe and welcoming environment while still pushing me to work hard to acquire knowledge and technique. Having started a little bit later than most, SCD has become my family and given me memories and opportunities that I would have rarely achieved anywhere else."

❄️ Let's hear it for the newbies and hear what they are saying about being in The Snow Maiden for the first time! ❄️ Standing left to right: Dalary, Sigrid, Isa and Charlotte Sitting left to right: Arleth and Madeleine

Dalary, who just loves to dance and will be busy with two roles this December, is excited to be in the show because "[her] dance is really fun! The best part is that [she] gets to take the Snow Man's nose." Keep an eye out for Dalary as that mischievous Jack Frost.

When she was 9 years old, Sigrid began ballet with the BECA Program (Ballet En Cada Alumno ~ Ballet Within Everyone), and she "became inspired to study ballet more deeply at SCD."

For this year's production of The Snow Maiden she is excited, "I get to perform for my class and the public — and I also get to be with my sister, Arleth."

In addition to wanting to share her dance performances (she will be a Snow Angel and the Owl in the Snow Animal Quadrille), Sigrid's goal is "to be a strong dancer." We think she's well on her way!

Arleth (pictured on the flyer for The Snow Maiden) began taking pre-ballet classes when she was just 4 years old.

Now at the ripe old age of 6, she enjoys attending her ballet classes and rehearsals. She wants to grow up "to dance in pointe shoes like the big girls!" This year, she is taking on the roles of the Domovoi and a Snow Drop.
Get your tickets to cheer these dancers on! 🥳

🍂 We hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving break! Upon returning to our first class yesterday, we asked our students to share a few things that they are grateful for and boy was it heartwarming to hear what they most value 🧡 We at SCD are also so grateful for nurturing an inclusive community of creativity and kindness.

Here's a note from Ms. Patty:

"First, there are the myriad ways that the studio has been supported in the past year and all that we have been able to accomplish!

• We have continued with all of our classes, summer dance camps, Royal Academy of Dance examinations, and performances, including The Magic Toy Shop earlier this year.
• The newest accomplishment — our first-ever "friend raiser" — took place at the studio earlier this month. So much gratitude to the committee lead by chairperson Joan Weill.
• And to everyone who worked behind the scenes in a hundred different ways: We could not have done it without you!

Then, there are the incredible people — students, staff and volunteers — whom I have the privilege of being surrounded by.

• Students who bring a smile to my face every day and keep me young at heart.
• Staff that keeps growing in skills.
• Volunteers who help make the magic happen at our productions.
And there is the remarkable financial support throughout the year, which has allowed us to expand the number of students able to utilize our Tuition Assistance Program and to continue to fulfill our mission to nurture the creative spirit of our community through dance. Sonoma Conservatory of Dance is grateful to our annual supporters!

In this present moment, I want to thank everyone who has contributed in the first quarter of our 2025-26 School Year — from individuals and businesses and foundations to the City and the County of Sonoma — we are so grateful.

Most of all, I am grateful for you — without you, we would have no one to share our love of dance with. It is our honor and privilege to work with our students and to then share that work with everyone in the community.

Thank you for allowing us to share the joy and gift of dance with YOU!

With a grateful heart, Ms Patty"

**Ms. Patty"**

❄️ Aaron Bremner returning to SCD's production of The Snow Maiden ❄️

SCD: What’s one of your favorite things about ballet?

AB: I am a fan of the complexity found in some older art forms. The detail in classical music composition and the fine-tuned control of body mechanics in ballet fascinate me.

SCD: What’s one or more of your favorite things about being at SCD?

AB: One day very soon I will get to tell my daughter that "I dance here too."

SCD: Aaron, you've been involved with SCD in one way or another since middle school.

AB: Yes! A group of middle school boys (of which I was one) was sent by Diana Rhoten to work with Ms Patty. The goal was to create an all boys dance number which parodied classical ballet. Parodies require some foundational knowledge to draw upon, and we were lucky enough to be welcomed into Ms Patty's studio for a formal education. This group of middle school boys completed what I later imagined to be a pre-school level introductory class presented by the ever patient Ms Patty. That class brought forth a bit of choreography that has been recurrent ever since. The "Plié – Doot-Doot" was a slow plié followed by a rapid movement into relevé with arms in fifth position all while vocalizing the "Plié" and the "Doot-Doot."

SCD: What has your experience at SCD been like for you?

AB: SCD has helped me to stay grounded in the foundations of movement and humble on the stage. I have been in many shows where I act the fool and fumble for the amusement of others. Being a supporting character in the SCD shows gives me a sense of pride from having helped the next generation find their confidence.

SCD: Has ballet made a difference in other activities that you do such as circus arts?

AB: Cross training is common in many sports, but ballet specifically has helped me develop confident posture and graceful transitions. A slouch will earn you less applause than a head held high!

SCD: Have you found ballet to be a challenge?

AB: Definitely! The boys and men in ballet have to accomplish not only the task of being graceful, but also doing so while lifting a person over your head. True strength is power through your entire range of motion.

SCD: Do you have any goals for the future that you would like to share?

AB: I plan to bring my daughter to take her first dance classes at this studio.

The four winds: Savanah, Nina, Valentina, & Ursual 🌬

Photos 1-2) Twirling in from the West: Savanah is excited to be bring all of her artistry and technique to her roles in this year's production of The Snow Maiden — especially as the West Wind. She shares that what she likes most about this role is that it is very different from what she's performed in the past. It is quick, vibrant, and full of energy. Channeling these elements is difficult for Savanah as a taller dancer who prefers slower choreography, but it has been fun to rise to the challenge.

Photos 3-4) Living the dream as the North Wind: Nina always looks forward to being at the theatre backstage with her friends because she has been making so many fun memories for the past NINE years and she hopes that she will get to add to those fond memories again this year when she will be dancing a role that she has longed wished to perform — the North Wind!

Photos 5-6) Debuting in a principal role as the East Wind: What Valentina loves most about dancing her various roles in this year's show — and she will be the Fortune Teller, a Snow Flurry and the East Wind — is that she can act and go full out with no judgment. The dance floor and the stage are her safe spaces where she feels that she can be her fullest self and do what she loves most: dance! All of us who are lucky enough to dance with Valentina in class and rehearsals and all of those in the audience who are lucky enough to be touched by her grace and enthusiasm are so glad that she found her way to SCD!

Photos 7-8) Gliding in from the South: Who loves a good challenge? Ursula does! In this year's production of The Snow Maiden, she has "conquered" the many aspects included in the choreography for the South Wind, based on the traditional dances from the country of Georgia. She says, "It's a new level of experience; there are such different techniques from Classical Ballet involved." In addition to being a part of the larger productions at SCD, Ursula enjoys do the many little shows for schools and fundraisers including being part of the Fourth of July Parade and Sonoma Charter School's Teddy Bear Tea Party.

¡A Ursula!
