Midsommar is almost here! 🇸🇪

Midsommar is a celebration of the summer solstice – the longest day of the year. It’s a time to welcome in summer and all its joys: warm weather, bountiful harvests, and plenty of sunlight. The festival has been celebrated in Sweden for centuries, with roots dating back to pagan times.

Today, Midsommar is a time when people across the country come together to celebrate their shared heritage. The festival typically lasts several days and involves a variety of customs including dancing around maypoles (known as Majstång), feasting on traditional foods like herring and potatoes (known as Smörgåsbord), and drinking shots of snaps/aquavit.

Want to celebrate? I will be sharing some local events for you to enjoy.

Fantoft Stave Church - The old stave church at Fantoft, originally built in Fortun in Sogn in 1150 and moved to Fantoft in 1883, burnt down on 6 June 1992. The church has been rebuilt exactly as it was before the fire, and is open for visitors every day through the summer from 15 May. 🤗

Lund's Cathedral, consecrated in the 12th century after Lund became the Nordic archbishop's seat.

Inside the church there is, among other things, an astronomical clock from the 15th century.

The longship. The battle axe. The clinker-built boat. Skiing. Even the hair comb. The Vikings were an inventive lot but little known to most, they played a huge role in shaping everyone's favorite time of the year: Christmas!
