Before planting a new vineyard, the ground must be prepped. Weeds broken up, stones cleared, and nutrition attended to. Sometimes this is a multi-year process even before a baby vine touches the earth. For our East vineyards after cleaning up the land we planted sorghum. This grass smothers weeds, adds organic matter to the soil and it helps penetrate and aerate compacted subsoil. Look for new baby vines after the winter season!
