What an amazing evening at The Vinyl Society last night, honoring Lane Coleman on his election as Board Chair of the Detroit Institute of Arts, and Dr. Charles Boyd named as Co-Chair of The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) Board of Directors. Host Dennis Archer Jr. commissioned me to do portraits of the two honorees, and we presented them to them last night. It was more than humbling to be there with some amazing people, many from Detroit’s art community in general and Detroit’s African American arts community in particular.

I had the honor of orchestrating a paint by number portrait of harry Bellafonte, four and a CLU fundraiser some years ago. He was an incredible gentleman. He resisted signing the canvas, saying he didn’t really have anything to do with the work. I assured him that the price in auction would be considerably greater if he did…he agreed.

Saddened to learn of Harry Belafonte's death this morning. I had the great pleasure of orchestrating a paint-by-number canvas of him for an ACLU fundraiser in 2008. He was an incredible gentleman. He was reluctant to sign the canvas, explaining that he really didn't have anything to do with the work. I assured him that the auction price would be considerably greater if he would. He did!
