Frühschoppen (meaning: an alcoholic drink before midday in company) is the German and Austrian tradition to meet up at a pub, inn or tavern in the late morning (usually on Sundays). The specific customs vary from region to region. Frühschoppen is often a kind of brunch, but does not necessarily involve food. Frühschoppen is also often held at fun fairs, the most famous being Oktoberfest or Cannstatter Volksfest.
In Lower Bavaria and most of Upper Bavaria, Frühschoppen is understood to be a specific kind of brunch consisting of Weisswurst, sweet mustard, pretzels, and Weissbier (an unfiltered wheat beer). The Bavarian Frühschoppen began in rural areas and has originally taken place on Sundays in a tavern at the regulars' table (Stammtisch). During Frühschoppen, folk may discuss everyday life and politics. In the corner of the tavern or festival tent (Festzelt) there is typically a band playing Volksmusik. (Nowadays some places have pop, rock, and jazz bands.)
In many other regions of Germany, Frühschoppen is understood more generally to be a gathering in a pub on Sunday morning, traditionally held after church service. This usually includes the consumption of alcoholic beverages, but not necessarily that of a meal. With the decline of church attendance in Germany this tradition has become somewhat less common, but is still held up in many places, especially in rural areas.

Of the castles in Germany, Neuschwanstein is the most famous because of Cinderella. But did you know Frankenstein was also inspired by a German castle?

A longtime member of our German-American Society Concordia Choir has passed away. Alfred Heston died January 8, 2022, surrounded by his children. He was a mainstay of our bass section for many years. A true, beautiful bass voice, Jerry could always hit the low notes. Jerry was always the life of the party. A private family mass will be held, and a memorial service is planned for later next year.

To read Jerry's full obituary, please visit the Hennessey Funeral Home website. Here is a link to his obituary:

HAPPY MONDAY!! It's Nikolaus Day and that's the time to have a "Weckmann", it's sweet bread shaped like a Nikolaus. The classic version has a clay pipe which we can't find in the USA. Did you see it? Weckmänner are made out of sweet yeast dough., and are not that difficult to make... Happy Baking!

Marburg is a university town in the German federal state (Bundesland) of Hessen, capital of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district (Landkreis). The town area spreads along the valley of the river Lahn and has a population of approximately 72,000.

Having been awarded town privileges in 1222, Marburg served as capital of the landgraviate of Hessen-Marburg during periods of the 15th to 17th centuries. The University of Marburg was founded in 1527 and dominates the public life in the town to this day.

Like many settlements, Marburg developed at the crossroads of two important early medieval highways: the trade route linking Cologne and Prague and the trade route from the North Sea to the Alps and on to Italy, the former crossing the river Lahn here. The settlement was protected and customs were raised by a small castle built during the 9th or 10th century by the Giso. Marburg has been a town since 1140, as proven by coins. From the Gisos, it fell around that time to the Landgraves of Thuringia, residing on the Wartburg above Eisenach.

Ludwig II was born in 1845 on the same day as his grandfather Ludwig I in 1786; the 'Dream King' is remembered for his Schlößer — above all Neuschwanstein — which inspired the Disneyland castle; his death was ruled a su***de but many believe it was murder; was it the nobility conspiring to have him eliminated because he was spending the state treasury on fairytale castles...? Whatever his failings, he was undoubtedly the most fascinating of all of Bavaria's rulers...

A view into Gereonstraße in Cologne with 120 years distance, looking to the east with the Cathedral in the background. Especially my American listeners may recognize the street. Here began in 1945 the Cologne Tank Duel, better known in the U.S. than even in Cologne, which should only end at the cathedral.
