In the new issue of Magazine, we gaze at our fraternal home, the California Masonic Memorial Temple; headquarters of the Masons of California, landmark, and a thriving arts and music venue.

But it isn't just Masons who can look at the CMMT with a sense of pride and ownership; it's the entire community.

Traditionally, we think of Shriners International as a fun loving group, known for their charity work and parade units. But, back in the late 1800's, around when the group was founded, it still had a bit of an esoteric bent.

This unusual drawing, entitled "New York City—Ritualistic Esoteric Memorial Observances of Mecca Temple, Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, at Masonic Temple, January 30th—the Burning of the Prohibited Garment", was originally printed in an 1886 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper.

If you look closely, you can see some early Shrine fezzes. For those keen students of history, you might even be able to identify who some of the men in the costumes are (hint, they are probably some of the founders of the Shrine.)
