When you have been playing and performing music for over 50 years it’s wonderful when you get to be a part of something special. Last night we had that opportunity.

The GENERATIONS: The Ozark Mountain Daredevils & Friends Concert at the O'Reilly Family Event Center on the Drury University campus was the kickoff to the celebration of their 150th Anniversary. That in itself is truly special. The announcement last week that a $50,000 endowed scholarship in our band’s name would be made available moving forward for students interested in the Liberal Arts was astounding, and we are humbled.

The fact that the wealth of talented people who took time out of their schedules to open the show and play some of our “deep cuts,” in their set was mind blowing. Many of us stood off in the wings and we don’t mind sharing that tears of joy were shed.

James Rea thank you for the effort you made to organize and mine the immense wealth of talented local artists that made up the lineup that preceded us on stage. As an artist you hope that your music means something to others who also choose to do this for a living.

We also can’t ignore that we were without a very important part of our band last night. Michael Supe Granda was very ill and despite that came to the venue, but just was unable to perform. We sent him home to bed, and he is doing better, but we missed his presence and thankfully he is recovering nicely.

In his absence Nick Sibley did an amazing job of taking Supe’s bass parts, while still playing harmonica. Folks that is not easy, especially when you didn’t know until 5 minutes before the show that you were going to be tasked with that assignment. Nick and the rest of the band stuck to the motto “The Show Must Go On,” and we hope you enjoyed what we did.

Sorry for the long post, but please know that this photo represents who we are and have been from day one, an inclusive band, it’s not about egos, it’s about the music, and last night was a testimony to what music in this part of the world is and has always been about, friends and family.

Thanks to everyone who atttended, thanks to our amazing friends at Headline Productions, for making everyone sound and look so good on stage, and finally thanks to all of those who have and continue to support this band after all these years.

John and Supe have been sharing this story recently at our live shows and it’s true….

The first song Steve Cash wrote was “Black Sky,” a two chord song that also was the song that afforded us an opportunity from CBS records to do our first demo, which eventually led to our band signing a record contract with A&M records.

His second song was “Chicken Train,” which is a one chord song, that ended up on the first album and we have played it every night for 51 years.

We are quite certain that his third song had no chords and we still haven’t heard it yet…

It's pretty surreal that Clinton & I are a couple weeks away from playing a show with The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. I've been reflecting how everything in my life has lead me to this point. As a young child I had a pediatrician in Osage Beach named Buddy Brayfield, who happened to be their original keyboard player, heard on many of the classic albums.

I've grown up around their timeless music and as I became a musician based here in the Ozarks myself, I have looked up to them as an inspiring reminder that you can make something happen exactly where you are, without digging up any roots for that supposed greener pasture. In fact, you're hard pressed to find greener grass than we've got in the Ozarks, anyway.

I am proud to call these rolling hills my home and the music of the Daredevils is forever woven into the rich tapestry of this area and its culture. It's a high honor to share the stage with these folks and celebrate their legacy. I highly encourage you to join us for the occasion on September 16th at the O'Reilly Family Event Center. While we mourn the passing of the great Jerry Moss, the “M” in A&M records, let’s share a story from the conversation that took place between John and Jerry during this reunion they shared a few years ago.

John - “Jerry I just want to apologize to you because I know how hard we were to categorize as band, we were all over the board with our music we had rock and roll songs, country songs, and I know we drove your marketing team crazy.”

Jerry Moss - “John we loved your band and creativity, we believed in your music, and don’t worry we made a lot of money off of your records.”

That was Jerry Moss and the world was better because of the creativity he and Herb Alpert allowed the artists on their label.
