This Old English Oak Carved Court Cupboard is available at Bernadine’s at Schaffitzel’s. Notice the beautiful carved detailing including the lions head and mane, with original dark oak finish, wooden dowel peg construction, dovetailing, and ornate ironwork. An exquisite piece that would be a focal point of any home. According to the description from Antique World website (see below) this seems to be one of the best examples.

“Antique Court Cupboards were first seen in the early 16th Century in Tudor homes and great halls. These early forms of antique furniture are usually built in solid English oak and have primitive construction like wooden pegs and old iron work straps along with clout nails. Antique court cupboards were designed to store cups, vessels and plates, along with displaying the master of the house’s large plate in the centre. It was the earliest form of antique sideboard on record. It got its name due to the fact, they are quite short pieces of furniture and the word ‘court’ is the Norman word for short and it also being a cupboard. They were only seen in very wealthy households, as these magnificent pieces would have been very expensive to build in such early periods. The best examples are of good smaller proportions from the 17th Century with panels that are outstandingly carved and have two turned finial droplets. Due to their age, they will have good old repairs, charm and character consistent with age and use, it makes them a real stately home piece.“

There’s something special about walking into a space that feels layered, lived-in, and personal. It tells a story. It feels curated, not by following trends but by blending pieces that have meaning and complement each other in unexpected ways.

One of the best ways to achieve that feeling is by mixing old and new furniture in your home. Whether you’re drawn to the charm of vintage finds or the clean lines of modern pieces, bringing together the best of both worlds creates a home that’s rich in character and uniquely yours.

I hope you enjoyed learning about this piece as much as I.

Happy Wednesday!

There is a little cacti everywhere in the greenhouse.. baskets all around & several starter pots in the veggie house!

We have one bishop’s cap left– such a unique find!Rhipsalis and Pencil cacti are some of the easiest varieties, though they don’t have the classic cactus look. Rhipsalis is a spectacular vining cactus that often start out smooth and appear prickly with maturity (still not super prickly to the touch)!

1) veggie house overview of cacti
2) Kalanchoe tomentosa (chocolate soldier)
had to sneak this gorgeous succulent in!
3-6) Astrophytum myriostigma ‘Huboki’ (bishop’s cap)
7-8) pencil cactus
9-10) peruvian apple
11) Senecio stapeliiformis (pickle plant)
12) monkey tail
13) Rhipsalis baccifera
14) Chamaecereus silvestrii (peanut cactus)

Mike and I had the opportunity to visit with our friend and customer Amanda Donat! She gave us a tour of her beautiful home, yard, and greenhouse! We had over 40 minutes of video footage but I had to take it down to 15 minutes to post! Amanda’s zeal for gardening is very encouraging and contagious! She loves to experiment with plants and gets excited to try new things! She’s also passionate about the ocean hence the salt water fish tank in her home office among her gorgeous orchid collection!🐠

Amanda has an amazing collection of Roses growing in her front yard as well as the yard at her Airbnb in Springfield, MO on Oak Grove called “Modern Rose Garden Home”! Amanda is a Realtor with “The Realty Group” Adin Baban and Associates. When she isn’t selling houses, gardening outside, propagating in the greenhouse, working on her Airbnb, beekeeping, working in her home office, or working on home improvement projects, you’ll find her on the tennis courts! She teaches at Millwood in Springfield full time! Amanda is also Ruthie Schaffitzel’s coach for the Homeschool team called Lighthouse Christian Chargers Tennis! While we were in the kitchen, her counter was covered with baked goods she made and had them packed in darling boxes for her family and neighbors! Amanda is beautiful both on the inside and the outside! She is definitely skilled in many ways as well as hospitable and just a delight to visit with! She and her fiancé Chris Zimmerman are planning a beach wedding in Jamaica for November 2025! 🌴Thank you Amanda for the Plumeria and Donkey Ear starts and the amazing tour of your home and gardens! Have a Happy New Year!🌹

Most of Amanda’s roses come from Heirloom Roses and a few from David Austin Roses!
We have Tea Roses available in our greenhouse courtyard in the Spring!🌹

Happy December 30th Everyone!! One more day of 2024! See you in the New Year!

8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. today! The greenhouse is still lush as ever🪴

We got in several new harvey lemons that look amazing! 🍋 Harvey lemons have a more classic tart taste, considered less sweet than a meyer. They are also nearly seedless with a high juice content!

Don’t forget to water your citrus plants less in the winter! Cut back to every 3-4 weeks, taking your tree to the sink for a good soak. If you have a larger citrus, you can always use a deep saucer to see how much it will drink up, but don’t leave it with wet feet! It is normal to see leaves dropping as they adjust to the winter months. Give your citrus lots of sunshine!

Come on in for a Home Tour of My brother and sister-in-law’s house, Joe and Shannon Reynolds! They hosted their annual Jesus Birthday party for our family and I thought this would be a good time as any to get some video of their lovely home in Southern Hills! This home may look familiar from this past summer! We did a video on all of their outdoor gorgeous flower containers!
You will see their beautiful wedding anniversary flowers on the piano designed by Vicky at SCHAFFITZEL’S! My brother Joe is the President of Central States Industrial - CSI and was nominated as one of the top 100 Businesspeople in the November issue of 417 Magazine! Pretty neat Joe!

Have a Merry Christmas!🎄

My cousin Carrie along with her youngest daughter Elsa treated us for the afternoon with a much anticipated Home Tour!
Carrie and her husband Michael Ellegaard spent many months remodeling their home with projects like removing all of the old carpet and adding hardwood floors. The beautiful wood trim, the brown paneling, and solid wood doors are all original! They updated the kitchen and moved the laundry room to have space for a pantry! Both upstairs and downstairs have the original gorgeous wood burning fireplace. Carrie’s decorating has a touch of her husband’s Danish heritage along with family heirlooms like the grandfather clock and a collective mix of colonial style with some modern touches! Come along with me and listen to Christmas music as we walk through their amazing and beautifully curated home! Carrie had lots of Milkhouse candles burning and it smelled amazing!

You might see their black vehicles drive around town with Michael and their son Isaac! Michael and Carrie own EEE Plumbing! They named it after their two daughters Emilia and Elsa Ellegaard! How fun is that! EEE Plumbing llc
Have a Merry Christmas!🎄

The greenhouse is plentiful of green & blooming plants for the holiday season 🎁 From bold blooms & big bows to simple greens, we are always eager to assist in finding a gift or decor addition to make any home more homey! Plants are such an expression of ourselves and the feeling we want in our spaces.

We are always ready to repot your plant or add a little extra cuteness, just ask! The rosemary wreath style is darling with just a simple, thin bow.. the larger wire vine is stunning with unique ribbon & pinecones. We love it all AND we love helping you find what you love! ❤️

Poinsettias are a longtime Christmas tradition— dating back to the early 1800s when Joel Poinsett, US Ambassador to Mexico, brought some to the States. They gained more popularity in the 1900s after Albert Ecke and his son grew them and promoted them in Hollywood! Since 2002, December 12th marks National Poinsettia Day! 🎄

String of Turtles (peperomia prostrata) 🐢

This string is actually a peperomia! Their turtle shell leaves trail or grow well in a terrarium rooting across the substrate! That being noted, these turtles enjoy humidity and slightly moist conditions. During the growing season, water more frequently! In the winter months, let your string of turtles dry out well and then give it a good soak. To maintain their stunning leaf pattern, keep in bright, medium light. They can take a little direct sun but not too much! To propagate, it is best to place a stem cutting over slightly moist sphagnum moss in the growing season (much like other string of plants). Older leaves will fade in color a bit– completely normal! Turtles often suffer from over-loving, so don’t helicopter this plant or over think it!
