The National Blues Museum cherishes the legacy of Gus Thornton, a beloved musician and an instrumental figure in our community. Gus was a recipient of the National Blues Museum’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award and a passionate advocate for the blues. His contributions to the genre were immeasurable, and his influence touched countless lives, both on stage and within the larger blues community.

Gus had such an amazing impact on the blues genre. He toured with Albert King one of the "Three Kings of the Blues" and played bass on Albert's legendary 1983 album with Stevie Ray Vaughan "In Session". Gus also performed with blues, jazz, and boogie-woogie piano master Katie Webster, including on her critically acclaimed album "Two Fi**ed Mama", and he accompanied the great St. Louis blues vocalist Kim Massie.

As we mourn his loss, the National Blues Museum stands with Gus's family, his fellow musicians, and his fans during this incredibly difficult time.
