We love our cute little building! On a mission to find out more history, I reached out to .stlouis and she dug up some interesting stuff!
Firstly, an old fire map from 1903 shows the corner had a two story brick building that was a dairy. Seems like the whole block was a dairy!
The property was on sale for $4000 in 1908
1963 our current building was built. Not exactly sure what was the original purpose of the building, but I’ve heard rumor it was an ice cream shop.
Allen’s Garden Center started in 196??
Next mention was a horrible story found in 1970 when Mr Allen chased down a robber and a shoot out ensued over $65. YIKES!
Probably the coolest part is how long this building has functioned as a neighborhood garden center and Christmas tree lot. At least 54 years!
Joe bought the place from Allen around 1998 and turned it into the SouthSide Garden Stop. We bought the place from Joe in December of 2014. Joe was a controversial character on Cherokee Street, but the man loved plants and loved that place. As he handed over the keys, he had tears in his eyes 🥺 I promised I would take good care of this little spot and we have been pouring all our love into it ever since! We are coming up on our 10th year in business here and we are getting a new roof! Always trying to improve and grow🌱
If you, your granny or your neighbor have any old stories, pictures or memories of the place I would love to hear/see them!
