It’s not just about the custom ceremony around here. It’s about the photography too. And today, hot off the press, our photographer Pete Rezac got this image during the ceremony. I can’t think of a better way to show the beauty and grandeur of the place where this couple got married.

It’s a beautiful day for a wedding and this couple just tied the knot. He’s 91 and she’s 84. They both cried during the ceremony. I love my wedding couples!

I do something with my ceremonies that I have never seen anyone else do. Each couple gets a custom ceremony. After they make their reservations, we chat. I ask questions. When we are done with our conversation, I sit down to create a ceremony for them. Of course, some basic stuff remains the same: most ceremonies have vows and the ring exchange. But even those rituals can be accompanied by different words, depending on what the couple wants.

Anyway, after I’ve created a ceremony, I email it to the couple. Today’s texted response is one reason why I love doing weddings.

One of the things I love about doing weddings is that I get to go to so many different places. And the modes of transportation are so varied as well! Over the years, I’ve used golf carts, horses, busses, hot air balloons, boats, ski lifts and 4-wheel drive shuttles to get to weddings. I did not get to participate in this wedding, but the word spread one year about a guy who parachuted into a meadow to his wedding. And then there was the time I did a wedding of a couple who wanted to get married in a bathtub full of bubbles. They had a LOT of bubbles!

But the one thing that never changes, no matter where the wedding happens, is the love I see in the eyes of the couple. That is always the same. And THAT is another thing I love about weddings.

This couple recently got married at Topaz Lake. It was the perfect day. We used regular cars to get there, and walked to the perfect place on the beach for their wedding.

There’s folks who show up with a nice camera, and then there’s Pete. He is one of Chapel of the Pines’s photographers and he knows his stuff!

I caught this photo of Pete in action today. You can’t see it, but he also has a light meter and a Leica film camera hanging around his neck, as well as an off camera light to illuminate his subject. He’s a pro!

Wedding couple stories: that’s what is on my mind. I love their stories, it is part of makes being a wedding officiant so rewarding.

I just got a call from a guy who said they had been together for 41 years, and even though they did a commitment ceremony way back when (before it was legal for g**s to get married) they never got legally married and figured they better do it now before that right was taken away again. Yep. I’m happy to support them in that.

Then another couple who reported via email that the reason they already have the same last name is because they were married once and got divorced, but never told anyone they got divorced, and were now wanting to get married legally again.

My wedding couples enrich my life!

Here’s a photo of a past wedding that we did. These two were both actors.

I have a public service announcement for you: you need a wedding license in order to get married.

Period.

Let me clarify that a bit: you can do a fun commitment ceremony, but you won’t be legally married unless you have a wedding license.

Period.

You must get a wedding license from the county clerk’s office in the state in which you are getting married, not the state where you live.

Period.

Simple and clear, yet for some reason this season I am getting quite a few calls from couples who are unaware of this. And when I tell them, they want to explore loopholes. The most popular one is to do a ceremony now and then get a license later and somehow apply to a ceremony that has already taken place. It simply doesn’t work like that.

This is the end of my public service announcement.

Here’s a recent image we captured of a playful bride and groom. Who showed up to the wedding with their wedding license in hand.

Some days are like this: today I have had phone conversations with no less than 6 brides and grooms, calling for information and to make their reservations for their weddings. It is shaping up to be a busy summer!

I mention this on my web site, but when a couple becomes “mine” by confirming their reservations, I then go to work creating a custom ceremony for them. This means each ceremony is a little different, tailored to the desires of the couple.

Earlier I sent off a ceremony to a couple that called a few days ago, and this is their response:

“PERFECT! We both love it very much & already made
me cry. Thank you for your thoughtfulness & kindness, already making this a memorable journey, thanks to you!”

Now THAT’S what I like to see!

Here’s a photo of one of our previous weddings, created by our photographer Pete Rezac.

You can’t make this stuff up.

So! I had a wedding today. At 15 minutes to the appointed hour, the bride calls me and the following conversation ensues:

Bride: “We don’t have our wedding license.”
Me: “Can you go back to your hotel and get it? I’ll wait.”
Bride: “No, we never got the license.”
Me: “Oh.” Much lamenting on the part of the bride and by that time I had collected myself enough to make a suggestion. By this time she was in tears. And it was 4:30. So I suggested we meet at the county clerk’s office and try to get the wedding license. Luckily, the clerk at the window was accommodating, and she knew who I was, so she got us set up. While my couple was getting their license, another couple that was already there walks out with their license and apparently they asked the clerk where to go to get married. My bride heard them and pointed me out.

Long story short: I married that sweet little couple right there at the table in the county clerk’s office while waiting for my other bride. They had been together for 14 years. They wanted to get married because the groom was having medical issues and the bride needed to be a spouse in order to advocate for him. The groom was hilarious, and both were very happy.

I never did find out from my first bride why they didn’t even make the apppointment to get their license. I gave them all the information like I do for every wedding couple. Thanks to the county clerk, they got their license and I married them as well.

The picture is of my sweet little couple, right after they became husband and wife.
