Friday flashback. This was the week of March 7th, 2020. It was warm that week and the ground started to thaw. And with that, came one heck of a muddy mess. BUT, the venue started to look like an actual building. This was one week before COVID hit the US and that would bring a whole round of other issues.

As this is our 5th year in business (we know, 5 years already!!), we thought we would share some construction photos over the next few weeks and show you a peek behind the curtain on the construction of the venue and some insights as well.

These photos are from the week of February 21st, 2020. What these photos don't show is the frustration getting to this point. We haven't really talked about it much as this wasn't the most fun of times. The previous summer and fall was fun--designing the venue. And announcing our plans and having everyone excited for us and to have a new business in the area. But then December and January hit. In the summer of 2019, we had built a hog house and had extra dirt from that project. We used that dirt to build up the pad of the venue. But we quickly found out the dirt we hauled in was not good construction dirt. As they would drill into the dirt, the surrounding dirt would fall in. We quickly went to the drawing board to figure out a new plan, which we did but was significantly more expensive. In addition to that, we now had the project delayed by a month and we had to heat the ground as it had frozen by that point. Yet, another expense. As the walls started going up, we started to feel some relief. We were in the clear now, right?

Yesterday we asked what the grain bin was utilized for. The correct answer was B even though C is also a valid answer. While it was not answer A, Deb still does want a she-shed and now she has Julie Abbott Feeney on that bandwagon as well.

For those of you who do not know the story on the grain bin, here it is. As mentioned, answer B was correct as it is used for our bulk water storage for our sprinkler system. Inside the grain bin is an insulated water tank that holds 10,000 gallons and then a control room for the pumps and control panels for the sprinkler system in the venue. But why would we put this system and water storage in a grain bin?

As we were looking at the bulk water storage, either the big tank sits upright where the bin is now or we would have had to bury it. Burying it was cost prohibitive but having a bulk water tank as you drive up to the venue was not attractive either. We felt like we were being placed between a rock and a hard place when our dad spoke up and said, "use the grain bin off the Ackley farm". This was a bin that we did not utilize much anymore due to its smaller size, and it had some sentimental value to it as well. This was the first grain bin that our grandpa and grandma had put up 45 years ago. This was also a grain bin that one of our previous landlords, Ronnie Brandt, had put up and we to this day have a great relationship with that family. In fact, we rent farm ground from Ronnie's two sons and grandson now. And we later found out that when Ronnie was building grain bins, the whole family helped out. His daughter, Jane Lindaman, told us she spent summers putting together grain bins and probably helped on this one.

For us, utilizing this grain bin was cheaper than burying a tank, and helped with the rural "vibe" we were going with versus having an exposed tank on the property. It also helps preserve part of our family history as having the first grain bin that your grandparents built as part of the venue is pretty cool. Now you know the rest of the story behind the grain bin.....a lot of history, memories, and relationships from a simple structure.

Tuesday Trivia....How many of you know what the grain bin at Timbers Edge is used for? Is it:

a. Deb's "she shed" that has a bunch of stuff in there that we never have used nor will ever use?

b. The bulk water storage for our sprinkler system should that ever be needed?

c. The structure that we put in place for people who are drinking on the patio to fling random things at making them feel like champions because they were able to hit a big object and at the same time, provides Korey entertainment every time he mows for what he finds over by the bin in the grass?

What's your vote? A, B, or C?

For the last couple of weeks, we have been highlighting the vendors and indivduals who came to our open house. Today is the last of these spotlights and it's one of our favorite people....Pastor Lynn Arends.

Lynn is the Pastor at East Friesland Presbyterian Church and Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church and he is the guy we recommend over and over again if you need an officiant for your service. Yes, you can grab anybody to be your officiant. But, Lynn puts all of his heart into each wedding he does and he will make your wedding memorable and something you smile about when you look back on it.

Lynn is an incredible person and when I asked him why he does weddings for people he doesn't know, his response was "Because I want to see it done right". If you need an officiant, reach out to Lynn Deanna Arends--you will be happy you did!
