Here’s to Hank McCoy, a very good boy…
was such a loving boy, sweeter than sugar. A mama’s boy for sure but we had a special bond ever since I pulled a cactus thorn from his paw on the day we met. Once proclaimed “the friendliest dog in the neighborhood”, he made all the corgi girls swoon in Hollywood. His favorite show was definitely Bluey but in our heads he was voiced by Joe Lo Truglio, a Boyle through and through. He was featured in a coloring book, loved climbing ladders and going down slides. We always thought he was jealous, but maybe he knew he had less time to soak up all the love. He was a great brother to Thor, who never wants to share his toys. Hank was happy to just run alongside Thor for every toss of the ball. Hank preferred a stuffed elephant for a toy, and wanted to cuddle even on the hottest nights. We called him our “elder baby” because he never seemed to age, now I wish we could have seen years of white hair dust your face. We’ll miss the way your eyes would light up for honey like Ponyo for ham. Our Captain Hank’merica, with a heroically happy heart.
We said goodbye to Hank this morning under the ash tree in our backyard. A massive tumor had grown on his spleen without showing symptoms until earlier this summer when Hank became reluctant to eat. Betsy and I spent weeks trying countless foods but an ultrasound at the vet diagnosed the issue, and showed a second smaller growth on his liver. Samples came back, it was cancerous. And odds were that his spleen would burst. We spent one last good week with him, despite this awful heat wave.
I’m sorry I couldn’t pull this thorn from your paw buddy. Find Digby and have him introduce you to Winston, we’ll meet you all at the river’s edge someday. Love you! 💙
