Recognize this familiar face?

For over 30 years, Brent has been a proud ambassador of WoodsEdge fiber products, bringing our handcrafted goods to farmers markets across the region. In this nostalgic photo, he joined his father, Fred, at the iconic Union Square Market in NYC. A legacy of quality and tradition, one market at a time.

Welcome to Meet the Herd Monday! Visitors to the farm always ask " Do you know all of their names?" We figured this would be a fun way for our followers to get to know our farm residents who have personalities all their own. And yes, we know all of their names.

Romina (aka Romy - pronounced Roam-me)

Let me share a story about our newest addition to the WoodsEdge llama herd, Romina. This charming little llama arrived from Washington state this past spring, having been born and bred by .

Romy is what we call a 'heart purchase.' One night last winter, while casually scrolling through Facebook, a picture of a cria (baby llama) appeared on my feed. I did a double take.

You see, I have a favorite llama named ‘Brat.’ Now, I know you’re not supposed to have favorites, let alone admit it, but I’m pretty sure everyone in the herd knew Brat was the ONE. Brat's story is one for another time, as she holds a special place in my heart, but she was getting up in age.

I believe it was a premonition of what was to come because, with Facebook’s algorithm, you don’t always see everything. This adorable black cria with big ears struck me - I had seen this photo before, or had I?

Romy’s baby picture was a spitting image of Brat’s baby picture! I had to have her. Normally, when we consider adding to our herd, we evaluate important factors like bloodline, fiber quality, and conformation. But this time, all those considerations flew out the window as my heart screamed, "Buy her - she’s a young Brat!" With my best puppy dog eyes, I asked Brent for his approval. He agreed, and I wasted no time in quickly sending the deposit.

Over the winter, she grew up and finally made her way to WoodsEdge this past spring. Romy was a bit nervous as she jumped off the trailer and it’s taken some time for her to fit in, but now she has a permanent place in the herd. Nowadays, she even comes up to the fence to eat out of my hand.

When you visit this winter, be sure to look for Romy - she’s the one with the most perfect set of banana-shaped llama ears. Romy’s journey to WoodsEdge is a reminder of the unexpected joys that life brings and how sometimes, a little serendipity can lead to the most wonderful additions to our lives. I know that she is her own llama, but if I’m lucky, she might turn out to be my next Brat.

Seeing double? As a fiber farmer, selective breeding is a vital part of our farm's sustainability and quality enhancement. We meticulously choose pairs to mate based on specific fleece characteristics, like the fineness, uniformity, and crimp of the fiber, as well as the richness of color and staple length.

Our goal is to produce offspring with superior fleece that not only meets the industry's highest standards for luxury textiles but also contributes to the genetic diversity and health of our herd. This thoughtful approach to breeding ensures that each generation contributes to an even more exceptional quality of fiber, which in turn can lead to higher market value and better end products for our customers.

Harvest time is just around the corner! One of the responsibilities of a fiber farmer is shearing, which is the process of removing the fleece from our alpacas & llamas. This is done once a year and is crucial for maintaining the health and comfort of our animals.

The top 3 reasons why we shear:

1. Temperature regulation: Shearing helps to reduce the risk of heat stress . Our alpacas & llamas will stay cooler in warmer months by removing excess fiber that can trap heat, preventing overheating and discomfort.

2. Overall health and hygiene: Without annual shearing, fiber will become dirty and matted, which can cause discomfort. Also, shearing in the spring will help to prepare them for winter by allowing their coat to grow back in time to keep them warm.

3. Fiber production: Alpacas & llamas produce high-quality fiber. Shearing allows for the harvest of their luxurious fleece, which is used to create high-quality garments and textiles.

We are excited to announce that our annual Shearing Fest will be held Sunday, April 7 from 10am-3pm. Visit WoodsEdge.com to find out more details.

For one day only the WoodsEdge Farm Store will be open this Saturday, February 10 from 10am-4pm!

We typically close the farm through the winter months as the weather makes getting around tricky. But we are having a mild winter and this Saturday looks like it's going to be beautiful, so get outside and enjoy the Vitamin D along with some llama & alpaca laughter.

Animal Husbandry is a crucial aspect of fiber farming. As farmers, we are responsible for the care and well-being of our animals which we take this very seriously. This involves providing healthcare, shelter, and optimal nutrition to ensure the animals have a happy life while producing high-quality fibers.

Pictured is Brent trimming a foot, llamas residing in their barn suite, Amy giving a de-worming injection & a yummy round bale which is offered free-choice for all of our animals.

We don't talk much about ourselves, but figured since it's growing season, we have some time to give you a peek in to our world as fiber farmers.

Brent & Amy - that's us. We are the owners of WoodsEdge Farm in Stockton, NJ. 2024 marks 48 years of breeding fiber producing livestock. Some days our knees feel that old, but the farm was founded in 1976 by Brent's parents.

Now, what is fiber farming, you ask? A fiber farmer is someone who raises animals primarily for the production of fibers, such as alpaca, silk, wool, cashmere, etc.. We focus on cultivating the quality and quantity of fibers from our animals. With that comes many other aspects, so stay tuned for future posts to learn more.

Our alpaca yarn is the thread that weaves through the 47 years of history at WoodsEdge.

Alpaca is known for its softness, warmth, and luxurious feel. Read on to learn about this amazing fiber.

Softness: Alpaca fiber is softer than sheep's wool and is often compared to cashmere. It has a smooth, silky feel that makes it comfortable to wear.

Warmth: Alpaca yarn is known for its excellent insulation properties. It provides warmth without being overly heavy, making it a popular choice for winter garments.

Hypoallergenic: Alpaca fiber is naturally hypoallergenic. It lacks the lanolin present in sheep's wool, which can be an irritant for some people. This makes alpaca yarn a good choice for those with wool allergies.

Durability: Alpaca yarn is strong and durable, ensuring that items made from it will last. However, it is not as elastic as sheep's wool, so it may not spring back to its original shape as well.

Variety of Colors: Alpaca fiber comes in a range of natural colors. Additionally, it takes dye well, allowing for a wide variety of color options.

Breathability: Alpaca fibers are hollow, which gives them good breathability. This property helps regulate body temperature, making alpaca garments comfortable in a variety of weather conditions.

Sustainability: Alpacas are considered environmentally friendly animals. They have soft padded feet that minimize damage to pastures, and their grazing habits are less destructive than those of some other livestock.
