THAT’S A WRAP!! Our 27th Season of Screams was an Epic Adventure!! A huge thank you to all the Netherspawn, for it’s only by their collective efforts that Netherworld comes to life each and every night during haunt season. The work starts well before opening and continues well after close. Beyond the incredible entertainers, there’s a small army of equally devoted spawn who toil (often unseen) to help make Netherworld the world-class haunted attraction it has become. As you might guess, just getting all the monsters dressed and into make-up is a gargantuan task, but most people wouldn’t even think (nor should they) that all those costumes need to be washed…every day…that’s a lot of laundry! But that’s just the tip of the iceberg — there’s also food services, tech, maintenance & repairs, parking staff, cleaning crew, gift shop and photo teams, safety and operations, security, and slew of customer service personnel helping people in every imaginable way. And of course you have to schedule and coordinate all that staff. And let’s not forget the gamemasters who keep things going at Escape The NetherWorld! Thank you Spawn…one and all!
And thanks to all our guests who visited during our 27th Season of Screams! It truly fills our black hearts with joy to hear your laughs and screams, to see all of your great photos on social media, and to read all of the very kind reviews. Know that we’ll be working hard for months on end preparing two new haunts for you to enjoy in the fall of 2024…but first, maybe just a little rest.

5)Blood Prison (Mansfield, OH)- I managed to catch this notorious prison haunt’s “Krampus” Christmas show two years back and had my ass effectively handed to me. It had been a hot minute since last I’d seen their updated presentation but holy crap was this amazing! A perfect combination of dazzling visuals, creepy atmospherics and Universal-style jump scares, this one snagged the number one spot on my list of year-end Xmas haunt rankings. I was not prepared for the greatness I found within, and literally could not wait to see their regular season show.
Well, this year we finally managed to do just that. And while I think I may have enjoyed the holiday showcase just a wee bit more, they still delivered a high-quality, immersive, (and quite lengthy) indoor walk-through experience that rivaled most any others I saw this season. All the same exemplary traits from their holiday event were apparent here, including extended wings of the old prison that weren’t open before in the off-season feature. This coupled with a full cast of high-energy, in-your-face actors (including the absolutely terrifying “Warden’s Wife”) left quite an impression during our near sold-out crowd Friday the 13th visit there.

4)Brighton Asylum (Passaic, NJ)- Jersey’s long-running #1 indoor haunt delivered yet another top-notch entry to go along with their near impeccable track record. This place has been on the upswing for several years now, and I’m pleased to say they delivered one of their strongest shows to date last month. The updated outdoor midway has never looked better, and the completely revamped first part of the attraction exhibited some of their most detailed and elaborate sets I’ve seen there. Their sinister church set had me sold right from the moment I stepped inside. Anything that makes me say “wow” more than once is always commendable. And I found myself saying this several times throughout this lengthy walk-through. Featuring not one, but two floors housing separately themed attractions, this sprawling indoor feature is easily the state’s greatest haunt export running and continues to rank as one of the east coasts “must-see” Halloween attractions. I also highly recommend their holiday show which knocked my socks off the last time I caught it.

3)Chambers Of Hell (Hauppage, NY)- This Long Island veteran haunt anomaly absolutely crushed any and all expectations during my recent visit. I never expected to see the insane level at which these guys are operating these days. Having not been there in over a decade, I had no idea what they’d been up to. So, when I waltzed in there completely oblivious, I was literally beat over the head with set after amazing set featuring everything from lavishly constructed French Quarter renderings, to darkened catacombs straight from Hell with all sorts of crazy custom monster props, eye-popping special effects, and a cast of blood-thirsty savages for actors. Chambers of Hell went for the throat this year and absolutely succeeded on every level. I nearly gave these guys a perfect rating I was so impressed.

2)Pennhurst Asylum (Spring City, PA)- One of the very last stops of the 2023 haunt tour, Pennhurst managed to knock it out of the park with perhaps their best show to date. The all-new catacombs intro, and completely revised tunnel section were positively awe-inspiring additions this year that kept me grinning the entire time. Ofcourse the “Asylum” itself was first rate as well, boasting many of last year’s high-tech set and prop wizardry. But this year’s new pumpkin forest midway, as well as redone concessions & photo op section were HUGE adds for this already killer attraction. The trajectory at which this place has been improving every year is downright frightening, so who the hell knows where they’ll be at this time next year!?

1)Netherworld Haunted House (Stone Mountain, GA)- Atlanta’s own fantasy-meets horror Halloween mecca delivered another show-stopping performance on the very last stop of this year’s tour. I figured I’d end the season on a high note, and boy did I ever! This year’s new “elemental” themed first half was breath-taking in scope featuring some of the most dazzling visuals and two-story monster props I’ve seen in my days. But the second half also managed to equally impress with a multi-part traveling storyboard style layout depicting nightmarish creatures and sci-fi aesthetics. While the first half of this legendary attraction has always remained the best in the industry as far as special effects and props go, the second half has been quietly gaining momentum over the last several years. And this season’s “Cryptid Chaos” feature was nearly on par with the rest of the attraction. Added to this one of the most badass midways anywhere, killer merch shop, and some of the coolest photo ops you’re likely to see (at least in this dimension anyway), Netherworld remains a force to be reckoned with in the haunt industry, and most definitely deserves the number one spot on this or any haunted house ranking list.
